Adjusting the timing gears...no chain

I'm replacing the timing gears and chain as well as the waterpump gear with the LT4 ED set. I need to turn the gears (cam and crank) so that the dots on the gears are next to each other. When I have the cam gear at 6 o'clock the crank gear won't move and when I have the crank gear at 12 o'clock then the cam gear won't move......anyone have any advice? I think it may have something to do with top dead center?

Oh...and I broke a bolt off in the cam

Remove the rockers, then you will be able to turn the cam.

If I take out one of the spark plugs would that release the pressure inside the cylinder that's at top dead center? When the timing mark on the crank gear isn't at 12 o'clock the cam gear spins very easily.......

Yes,you could do that too.Whatever is easier for you. You better fix the broken bolt too.

Yeah I suppose I better get that bolt out Do you or anyone else know which cylinder is up when the dot on the crank gear is at 12 o'clock?

Thanx Joe97SS

The pressure bleeds off on the cylinder in a matter of seconds. You need to loosen the rockers like joeSS97 said. You are probably getting valve to piston interference because of the mis-timing of the cam and crank.
