I went in to our local Oreilly Auto Parts store to purchase an AC Oil Filter.

I was looking for the usual PF25 filter. However, there was a card on the shelf that said the PF25 is being replaced by Part #454. The longer PF35 is also being replaced, but I do not remember the new part #. I thought the 454 would be exactly the same as the PF25, but the 454 is a smaller filter. It will fit, but it has a smaller capacity than the PF25. I did not look at the replacement for the PF35.

I then checked out Autozone and PepBoys and Advance Auto Parts. They all still had the PF25 and PF35 in stock. I went ahead and bought several of each. I run a PF35 on my truck.

I know it sounds silly, but I feel the AC filters are the best bang for the buck. I don't care for Fram and all the other brands they make filters for.

What is the story on the change? I guess the smaller 454 would be ok, but I always heard a larger oil filter is always better. Maybe that is just an old wives tale.

 

I haven't heard about that, the parts changing. But, I do go with the PF35 because it is a larger filter, it has more filtering capacity, so it won't clog up as early as a PF25. I remember my roommate in college said it'd be a mistake to go with a PF35 because it would give the wrong pressure to the engine and majorly screw it up, but what the hell did he know he took his car to a shop to have the oil changed and never did any work to the car himself.

So basically...i guess it comes down to what you believe in, same thing as synthetic vs. dino oil...just personal preference.

 

The PF35 replacement is probably the PF1218, since this filter is the same other than it has an antidrainback valve.

 

Has anyone tried wixfilters.com? They're products are being used by nascars....I was on the corvetteforum.com or z06vette.com site and some guys are using it...I think it would be great for our cars. I'm gonna try one.

Hard to imagine that they are changing the part number on the AC filters after all these years. The PF25 has been around forever.

I looked at ACDelco.com and they list the PF25 and PF454 (and variations of them). The picture of the PF454 looks like it is even shorter than the PF25. Whether is really is or not, I don't know. It may have been the way the picture was taken. If it is indeed shorter, I would not recommend it. Kinda the opposite of going to the long filter.

Just the other day I decided to go with the PF35 as I have on some engines in the past. But I freaked out when after driving a bit the engine warmed up good and my pressure dropped too low. Didn't even realize my car had the check gages light until then. argh! So I immediatley went back to the 25 and changed the oil again. I had good level. Maybe it was the combination of high miles and 5w-30 synthetic. Might have been a freak occurance but I think I'll stick with what gm's recomending for now and just make sure I change every 3,000 miles.

 

i just started to run the pf35 and noticed no drop in oil pressure...it's exactly the same.

 

I just checked myslef on the ACDelco website and they list both the PF25 and PF454 as fitting the LT1. As for the PF35, as it was mentioned earlier, the PF1218 is basically a 35 with an anti drainback valve. It will fit in place of it just fine.

The PF454 is about two inches shorter than the PF25. I might try WIX if I can't find a PF25. I know they are very good. I understand NAPA filters are the same as WIX? Or did I dream that too?

I believe some of the NAPA filters are made by Wix, but not all of them. The NAPA Golds are Wix made, but the regular NAPA and NAPA silver I'm not sure of.

 

For those who run Wix, where do you buy them and how much do you pay for them? They are over 5 bucks at Oreilly. I haven't seen them in any of the other chains of parts stores. The Mom and Pop stores around here don't carry them either.

 

My pressure stayed the same...mobil 1 synthetic. And my car has 106,000 miles on it. I'm also using 5w - 30. *shrug*

 

I use PF1218 on my car. Has the same longer lenth like the PF35 but as mentioned it has an drainback valve. Oil pressure is the same as when I used PF25. The PF1218 works great for me.

I went in our local AutoZone today for some antifreeze. I noticed they have the PF454 and no PF 25's.

 

My nieghborhood Wal Mart quit selling the A.C.'s,and now carry thier own brand of oil filter.I picked up one for kicks$2.00 I think,got it home,and opened the box and compared it the A.C. Delco P.F. 25.---To me they look identical in every way shape and form.Anybody know who makes the Wal-Mart brand?(Model ST30).I'm afraid to put it on,as I have had good luck with the A.C.'s,and leaking problems from the Frams,and really don't want to do the extra work of changing them out all the time.(Stocked up on A.C.'s at K-Mart for about $2.80 or so each).???
