what would cause the abs inop light to light up from time to time?

many things. the most simple being a blown 3rd brake light

...or a poor/dirty connection at the ground lug on the RH shock tower.

Could you be more specific? Picture of where you are talking about?

I get it occasionally...it appears to be completely random.
