ABS INOP light wont go away, please help
Ok, I've posted this on other sites, but so far no luck. It's a 97 camaro. The other night, we had a pretty bad snow storm. It had ice inder about 3in of snow, and i was going up a hill, and only made it half way, so I made a u-turn, and went back down. Here I was slowly sliding down, and felt my brake pedal pulsating. Here when I finally came to the bottom, I noticed my ABS INOP light was on. I tried turning the car off and back on, but it stayed. Ok, this is what i've all tried so far. I've disconnected the batter over night to try to reset the pcm. I topped off the brake fluid because it was a little low. I pulled the abs batt, and abs ing fuses over night. I went through a car was as suggested and driving it around on normal dry roads, and still it's on. I don't know what else to do. Also too, my pedal feels pretty spungie even after I topped it off. Could my brake pads need changed. I haven't changed the pads since I bought the car, and only put less than 1k miles on it since i've had it, so I don't know the last time they were change. Could something be wrong with my master cylinder or something along those lines? I really don't want to take it to a shop, because I know they'll prob charge me an arm and leg. This is becomming extemely frustrating for me, and I don't know what to do now. If anyone can offer some help, It would be greatly appriciated. Thank you.
Previous posts have said that there are some kinda sensors on each wheel. If I were you,I would first try to drive over a bumpy or rocky road, and watch to see if the light goes out.The perfect ride would be over a new road being built, but not yet paved, but scraped for the new road. You'll see this before the tar is laid.Hope this helps.(Kinda a vibration thing as you are driving). If this doesn't work, try driving on the little road dividing things that separate each lane(The 4 inch reflector things). This may jar them loose.Might do it for a little while.I know this sounds hokee, but what the hey, give this a try first.My02
I agree with Fatdog. It is probably a ABS sensor at one of your wheels. I had a similar problem, where I would be driving down my street, (which is pretty bumpy) and when I get the stop sign at the bottom, sometimes I would feel my brake pedal push in and vibrate, and my brakes wouldn't work as well, and my abs light would come on. Kinda weird, but it would reset. I have pretty much narrowed it down to a faulty sensor.
If you do try the bumpy road thing, and it works, I would bet that that is your problem. Good luck

Got to get it scanned. There are 96 different codes just for ABS. I have a Snap-on scanner. My code (my light was on) was 57 left front abs motor. Went through the diagnosis in the service manual. Turned out to be the EBCM located at the drivers upper kick panel area. GM wanted $700.00 for it. Found it at a junk yard. The guy there didn't even know what it was. Gave him $25.00. Been working like a charm since August. A little reasearch goes a long way. What ever you do, don't shot gun. By the way, Autozone will scan for free. Just don't buy electrical items from cheap auto parts stores. Used originals are better than their cheap parts. Learned the hard way with an import fuel pump from those !@#$%^&.
Don't rule out the ABS reluctor gear on the top of the differential housing.
Also make sure you don't have any spark plug wires or other aftermarket wiring around the ABS module in the engine bay. Certain static frequencies have been shown to cause some pretty weird stuff with the ABS.

Also I replaced all the yellow fuses on the side of the dash,(and they looked good to the eye). That fixed my problem. And all the brake lights are in curcuit to the abs(Look at a wireing diagram).Make sure all the bulbs are the exact ones called for,and that the sockets havn't bit the dust.My02
