about to switch to mobil1 synthetic. what weight for texas heat?

I know things like this get asked alot, but there seems to be a million different answers. But alot that I have found were asking for cars that had over 70,000 miles. Anyhow my engine has about 37,000mi on it and I'm about to finally switch to mobil1 synthetic. What weight oil would be best for this engine with this texas heat and what would I switch to in the winter? Not sure if what type of engine I have changes anything but its all in my sig. Thanks for any help.

What made you decide on Mobil 1?
I know it was NOT meaningful research.

The best oil going for the LT1s is Castrol Syntec 0w-30 specifically labeled "made in Germany", this is thicker than most if not all the M1 30weight oils. It also works wonderfully when evaluated through used oil analysis.

I have heard alot of good things about the german castrol syntec oil. But is 0w-30 really good enough for this texas head?

The belief that 0w- makes something thin is just plain wrong. That oil is thicker at operating temp than most 10w-30 oils.

There is more bad info to be found about oils than good. Most people rely on marketing and missunderstand when making choices.

This is one of FEW places where you can find meaningful oil information.

Just to be clear M1 is not bad, it is just not as good in an LT1 as folks think it is based on marketing. For the same price or less there are better choices to be made.
This is not a comment on the quality of the product either, it is high quality, just fits some other engines better than this one.

Xw30 oils will all perform similarly in the heat. (the 30 represents a viscosity range at 100 degrees celcius or 212F)

The "german castrol" 0w30 has shown excellent results in used oil analysis.

Mobil 1 5w30 comes in both standard and extended performance and is also an excellent oil.

So long as you change your oil regularly, use a quality oil filter, and have a good oil pump, then "YOU" won't wear out your motor.

Lots of LT1's with over 200K miles on the odometer.

If you happen to have easy access to the "german castrol" it is an excellent choice.

I use a variety of synthetic brands depending on what I can get on sale. Almost always 5w30... My motor has over 160k miles on it...

GM specified Mobil 1 synthetic 5-30 for the vette LT1 in your climate.

If oil temps or ambient temps are your concern, Mobil 1 continues to work without breaking down at temps of up to 300F and higher. I've never seen oil temps anywhere close to that number.

Ever hear the announcers discussing the oil temps the NASCAR boys are running during a 500 mile race at 200 MPH and RPMs at and above 9,000?

It's impossible to get "real" German Castrol in my area without special ordering it, if that's even possible, so I use 15w-50 Mobil 1 for high performance engines. My motor really likes this thick oil and I've got almost 90,000 miles on the odometer. I've got a bad leak at the back of the intake, but I figure the new motor will be going in around winter time so I'll just leave it. This oil quieted the valvetrain down and it just seems to run smoother.

The only two places I've seen the German made Castrol is at Autozone and Pepboys.

I used Mobil1 10W30 in my LS1 since the first oil change (~10yrs.). I've tried 5W30 but I did get a slight bit more ticking noise.

Mobil has a ZDDP of 800 in most of its oil. Extended mileage is 1000 and is what I use. The 15w-50 race oil is 1300 but is not so good for your cat, hence race oil. Castrol and Royal purple do not post their value most likely because they have lower values.

How many of you are using Used Oil Analysis to evaluate your oil decisions???

I have a 227K mile LT1 in my driveway that far as I know never saw a drop of synthetic so your "90K miles and going strong" is completely and totally meaningless. Police and taxi LT1s go hundreds of thousands of miles on bulk oil noting fancy.
