Question a4 wont shift out of park

every once in awhile i cant get my car to shift out of park. i press the brake down and attempt to shift into drive, the thing sticks. ive taken the the console off and cleaned everything to see if that helped, but it still does it every so often. if i beat the **** out of it, it will shift to drive. any suggestions?

check the mechanism that stops it from shifting out of park until you hit the brake pedal.

I have somewhat of a similar problem. First startup of the day, trying to press down the button to shift out of park is a bear. Sometimes I have to pound down on the button to "loosen" it. After that, pressing the button down throughout the rest of the day is not a problem. I don't know if this is due to dirt buildup since I haven't pulled off my console to find out. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

are you guys parking on steep hills ? Sometimes the trans seems to get in a bind if there is a lot of pressure on it

I'm sure anyone with an A4 has had drink spilt there, the darn cupholder holds out fine when your accellerating, but theres nothing to keep it from flying forward when you brake =/ I want a cupholder "mod" for our console

No, I am not parking on a steep hill, or any hill for that fact. However, that is the feeling it has as if it is binding.

fluid

if you don't have enough trans fluid in i've found it hard to move out of park, and not only that but if you're lucky to get it out of park it won't shift out of first. its worth a try.

When parking on a hill, apply the hand brake, then put it in park. When leaving, put it in drive and then release the brake. This will prevent torque lock

i have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM... you described it perfect

this has been brought up quite a few times on this board, and i think most cars affected were the 1995 A4's... and the part to fix it was the gizmo that doesn't let you move it out of park until the brake is pressed.
