A4 maximum HorsePower handling?

I was wondering what the max hp that the stock A4 could handle. Also, what about the rearend...how much hp can that handle. I am looking at having around ~400rwhp. I've done searches but came up empty.

LOL...I know, she can be pissy sometimes. What do you suggest I do? Is there a rebuild kit that would be suffice...and if so what is the cost and installation price? I don't feel like spending a ton on the tranny...even though I know I will need to. I am just spending a bunch on the motor and tranny was really the last thing on my mind...I read that the M6 could easily handle 400rwhp. That's just not fair
Give me some suggestions please!!!!

you need more than a normal rebuild for 400rwhp-
if you dont spend alot now, you will in 3 months when the trans goes. no real way around it. You acn get a TH400 which will be cheaper, but bye bye OD.

the M6 has problems of its own we dont worry about- or as much.

I read that it was like 900 bucks to do the rebuild with out the kit...why not just by a new one. What upgrades will I have to do...do I really need a whole rebuild or just some upgrades...are they cheaper than a rebuild? Thanks

i read an article that gm rated the stock 94 4l60e at 350 ft/tq at 100,000 miles on the transmission,

i got mine rebuilt, with all highperformance parts for $600, but that is dam cheap, plus $100 for the transgo shift kit too,

mine went at 94k, w/ 11k on the ~325rwhp setup about,

look around and try to find someone who rebuilds them for a living and try to get that person to do your tranny on their own time.

good luck,
Jesse

I recently rebuilt my a4 after I blew it out in January. It had about 85k miles on it.

Makco Distributing

I bought all of my parts through them after looking at what parts were included in another kit online that was built to handle 550hp. I then rebuilt my transmission myself using common tools including feeler guages, a good caliper, and snap ring pliers. A rebuild manual is also a necessity. I spent about $600 on the setup, and the car drives very well now. If you take your time, and measure, measure, and measure again, you should be able to do the rebuild without much trouble. As a comparison, it would have cost me at least $2000 to have this transmission rebuilt at a shop. Also, I will only have to buy a few more parts, about another $600 to make this good to 750hp (for a time).

Well like someone said gm rates it at 350ft/lbs.But if it is working good now then why rebuild it until you have to.Add synthetic ATF,a big tranny cooler, trans go shift kit and a deep aluminum trans pan. These things won't make it last forever but may help it last for a while.

Well next friday i drop off my car for the Tranny rebuild. How long will it hold 400rwhp? well i don't know. I do know I had my 383 build by Allan @ www.futralmotorsports.com. I don't know how much power I am putting down right now. I got the car back not even fully tuned because Allan was leaving town for a week. Well I got it on Friday before Allan got back the following friday I blew the tranny. It took one good spin above 5000rpm and it was gone. i lost my 3rd gear. I would love to know what kind of power I had to do that but won't find out till after the rebuild and we finish tuning on the dyno. But when it blew there was not a smell, sound, or anything. Just hit some gravel rearend swung around and when I came to a stop no more 3rd gear or OD. Reverse still works though.

Well Later,
JoMo

That sucks JoMo!!! I hope that doesn't happen to me. I just want to keep her going long enough for me to save up to put in a new tranny. I don't think I could rebuild a tranny, I heard our was one of the hardest to work on. That is just what I heard. I found a couple of website and a couple of rebuild kits that will handle 450rwhp and 500rwtq. The kits are only a few hundred dollars but I am guessing, from what I am reading that it will cost around a grand...

The kits are around $200, then you might like to put in a couple extra things to make it better. Personally, if I had it to do over again, I would probably get the following:

1. Master kit with Alto Red Eagle clutches and kolene steels, or Raybestos???? Blue Magic???? (not sure on the brand or name of that second one/I bought the first).
2. Transgo shift kit.
3. 13 vane pump conversion
4. The beast sun shell
5. 5 pinion rear planetary gear

Maybe some real tranny guys could step in and say something more, but, from my 1 experience, this is what I would do. I wouldn't bother with any of the billet servos because the shift kit will do a pretty good job of managing all that stuff.

BTW, when I blew my transmission, it was stuck in second gear under full throttle and slipping. Suddenly it shifted to third and drove normal. I then parked the car, and went shopping. When I came back, the car wouldn't go into reverse! I had melted the forward clutches together with the steels and had to pry them apart when I took it apart.

well not sure what kits are running only a few hundred. Here is a starter of what i speced out. Some things are duplicated or similar because I hadn't decided which one to go with. But at dealer cost this was going to cost me around 1100 for everything and a few things not mentioned here. My engine guy can get it all for about 800 because he buys from the supplier of the people i was going to buy this from and can build it for about 400 or 450 sor for the extra 100-150 i have him do it.

#3X. 4L60E high performance overdrive billet servo. New on the market, this Maximum Overdrive Servo has 50% more holding power than the stock overdrive servo. Extreme Duty Front and Rear 5 Pinion Gears
Extreme Duty reaction carrier shaft with 2 bearings

Extreme Duty hardened intermediate shaft
Extreme Duty AOD hard lock-up shaft
Extreme Duty "The Beast" reaction shell and Bearing
7 count 3-4 clutch set plus 1 special backing plate
Intermediate billet servo (35% larger than the Corvette servo), you get the high performance overdrive billet servo (40% or 50% oversize) and the oversize pressure boost valve. These three parts will wake up your 4L60E and can be installed without removing the transmission or valve body.
4L60E, 29 element Borg Warner forward input sprag
Hayden transmission cooler 15 1/2 X 10 X 3/4
4L60E release spring kit

4L60E high output pump slide spring
4L60E Raybestos Pro Series Band
4L60E oversize pressure boost valve (.500")
4L60E performance 1-2 accumulator spring
Extreme Duty Hardened 700R4 / 4L60E Input Shaft and Drum

4L60E Extreme Duty rear planet with 5 pinion gears

4L60E Extreme Duty front planet with 5 pinion gears

Extreme Duty reaction carrier shaft

Well hope that gives you an Idea of my rebuild but i left out some stuff that I don't have written down in front of me.

Later,
JoMo
