A4 4.10 track times
A4 4.10 track times
I was having some problems at the track before. My 93 A4 (233/239 cam and LTs) dynoed 348 RWHP / 345 RWTQ and the best I could do on the stock 3.23 gears and a 2400 stall was:
60' 2.02
330 5.549
1/8 8.449
MPH 85.67
1/4 13.012
MPH 106.66
3605#
Temperature 68*
Humidity 31%
Track elevation: 756 ft
Pressure in: 29.97
After switching to 4.10s, yesterday it did:
60' 1.873
330 5.343
1/8 8.173
MPH 86.64
1/4 12.687
MPH 109.33
Temperature 65*
Humidity 33%
Track elevation: 756 ft
Pressure in: 29.76
So I think there was something wrong with the stock 3.23 rear. I know switching to 4.10s helped but I doubt that it would result in a MPH increase under normal circumstances.
Still, now that I got a chance to drive the A4 on the highway, I think 3.73s would be ideal for an A4
. With 4.10s it stays around 3200 for ~80 MPH which is pretty loud, annoying and I'm sure it is not getting the best gas mileage at that RPM.
Plus 3.73s, would've probably gained another MPH or so in the 1/4.
Either way, I'll be sticking to the 4.10s.. only in a 12 bolt and a 6 speed, in spring.

Re: A4 4.10 track times
Now you're getting there! What other mods do you have on your car Ion? If I were to guess, i'd say that with that stall, and high winding cam, a 1.87 is pretty close to what you can expect to see out of the hole. I still think there are 3-4 mph in there somewhere. I curiously gained a bit of mph after installing the 9" 3.89 gear from the 3.23 as well. That car must feel tons quicker with that gear huh?
Re: A4 4.10 track times
According to my calculations, if I were to switch to a 3.89 gear, I would gain 2.1 MPH in the 1/4. But then you also have a 9" which has a higher HP loss ratio than a 10 bolt so I think your car runs great! and it's pretty much at its peak. I doubt there is anything to gain from tuning but you can definetely gain a lot from a better stall.
Oh yes, my car has Jet Hot LTs, 233/239, cold air and magnaflow catback. Everything else power related is stock. I bet your airfoil is what accounts for the better run!

Re: A4 4.10 track times
You know, it would be really interesting if you would see any improvement with a hydra rev. I don't know if mine helped or not because I installed it the same time I installed the cam. According to AFR, there are some real hp gains to be seen above 5500 because of the heavy roller lifters launching off the ramps. Of course, they sell the thing so one could expect them to be biased that way.
Yea, I'm very happy with your custom tune you did for me.
It was like night and day let me tell you! I have a 383 in the works for next year. I know I would benefit from a higher stall speed for sure. Not to mention a 9 - 10 inch converter would be quite a bit lighter at the flywheel enabling better accelleration just from that. I am going to try the 2500 with the 4L60E and 383 first. I'm a little concerned about traction issues with the 383 and the low 1st gear. If I am fortunate enough to be knocking on the 11 sec door, and a higher stall would get me there, then it will go in.

Re: A4 4.10 track times
The airfoil comment was a joke right? Yea, it was. Sorry, I still need more coffee.
By the way, the 12.36 run at 111 was done with me lifting off the throttle so the dang thing would shift into 3rd gear! My trans will not shift into 3rd at WOT. I definitely left some on the table.

Re: A4 4.10 track times
Very nice,
4.10's really woke that car up! You probally still have 3-4 tenths in a yank or vigilante convertor especially with the trap speed your seeing.
What are you goign threw the traps at?
Your trapping about 2-3 MPH higher than my auto hotcammed 93 that ran 12.5's

Re: A4 4.10 track times
Alvin,
the times and trap speeds are in the first post if that's what you asked.
I think the trap speed would've been higher if I had 3.73s instead, but I'm happy with it regardless. This car has been something for me to work on (=relax) during the weekends and I never meant it to be an ET freak.
I bought it with a bad engine last year and it could barely do 20 MPH... It was a worthless, filthy piece of junk back then.
You can see the two runs I did at the track yesterday here:
Run 1
Run 2
PS. The only thing 93 in its drivetrain is the transmission (well that and it's still speed density/93 ECM). It has 129K miles on it and I'm surprised how well it handled all this abuse so far. I am shifting it manually at the track, but letting it shift at stock shift points yielded a 107.86 trap.

Re: A4 4.10 track times
Na I meant to say what RPM you where going threw the traps at..
Just interested in how a 4.10 auto goes threw at. Its a steep gear!
I've been to the track the past 6 weeks in a row with my girlfriends LS1. (6speed Airlid, catback, tuning 12.74@110) I've totally forgot how fun it is not to mention how addictive it is.
I don't feel confortable racing my T-Trim formula anymore. At its power levels I feel I would be spending too much time putting in clutches and rearends etc.. I'd also rather get back into something like my old setup that ran great on DR's.
I'm thinking about picking up anthor "needs TLC" LT1 to do what your doing.. just have fun with at the track. Something with a mild cam, headers, clutch and gears..

Re: A4 4.10 track times
WOW Nice times... Last time we talked you were thinking about selling the engine....
I would buy a stall instead and go 11s..... How much longer is your track open? I have been working long hours six days a week ..... I have about 2 more weeks then things will be back to normal....

It was pretty loud and I'm sure the gas mileage would suck bad if driven daily. Now 4.10s in a 6 speed, is a completely different story. Drop it in 6th and fuggedabootit.

This car is getting a 6 speed in spring, so I'm sure it will be more fun then. I miss the 6 speed ever since I sold my '95.
LS1s are fast and they're definetely nice but I still like LT1s more.

I figured it will only take me a few hours to swap it so why not?
Turns out it worked. The old rear was the problem. As for Byron, they currently show the last dates on their schedule to be the 13th and 14th... which is next Saturday/Sunday. If you plan to take advantage of it, you're welcome to borrow my slicks.
Re: A4 4.10 track times
Ion, I have the 93 A4 4;10 but have only run on 1/8. I wanted to take my car to a 1/4 mile track this spring. Did you have enough gear to cross the line and what RPM were you at? Thanks
