Ask most guys around here who bought an lt1 since 98 and see how many would of still bought it still, after the ls1 was around. I kick my tire everyday and wish i got an ls1(no no J/K).
The ls1 is a flat out better car. faster, lighter, better gas milege, no optispark, plug access, no driveshaft vibration, etc. It does have it's bad points, rotors, piston slap, oil consumption. But all in all it is better. I have most minor bolt ons except headers and gears and my friend's ls1 would wack me in 3rd gear. Save your cash and get a 01 or 02. you want a 4th gen with little miles. Everyone beats the crap out of these cars.

Don't get either car.

LOOK around, you can find all sorts of deals.

You said you want a 6 speed, then look around for one.

Get an LS1 if you can!

There's definitely deals better than the ones you're currently looking at. For instance http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...hreadid=234902

Not a ws6 but that car has low miles, got quality mods and priced low. There's some good ls1 deals out there as well. Good luck.

If I had to do it again, I'd get an LT1 again. Iron block, aluminum head. That's all I'd need to hear. Parts are also cheaper for the LT1s, and they look better (matter of opinion). The odds are people would change the driveshaft to an aluminum one anyway. As far as being lighter, the difference in weight is minimal.

As for piston slap and oil consumption, these are two reasons alone (of the many) why I would prefer an LT1 over an LS1. Sure, optisparks suck, but as long as it's a vented one, they're not as much trouble.

On the upside of the LS1 cars, aside from being quicker off the factory floor and getting better gas mileage, their braking system is superior to that of the LS1 cars. However, my cousin had a 98 Z28 with an A4 and he says he got about 15mpg around town in it. He said it guzzled gas. I think there was also something wrong with his LS1, because that thing was a flat-out DOG. That car would have been lucky to run a 14.40. On the other hand, a buddy of mine with a C5 said he has gotten 31mpg on the highway with the top out.

I would get the LS1 just because you said you are not going to mod it right away so for the time being you will have more power than the LT1.

Also if it a RAM AIR they are so sweet loking.

Between those two I would get the 98. I would definately work on the price though. I'm sure they will come down a little. As for an auto they are fine. You can pick up a Midwest or TCI torque converter for less then $500 and you'll be all when you punch it at the track. The 4L60E isn't the greatest but they handle up to 400 RWHP just fine if you take care of them. I know lots of guys running 3800 stalls, bolt-ons, mild cams and stock heads that put down 375-400 rwhp and stock tranny. Of course they use shift kits and change the fluid every 12k miles or so.

I got the white with tan interior and I'll admit at first I wasn't crazy about it. But when clean white does look sharp. And if your into racing stripes then no combo looks better IMO then a bright blue on white. Check these pics out. Not everyone will like this look but a lot of people have complimented me on it.

It was only $200 and I installed it myself. Autos with aftermarket stalls rule at the track so don't feel bad about getting an auto if you want to do any drag racing. If your not gonna race it at the track then I might consider holding out for an M6.

Good Luck
