97 TA change oxygen sensor
Hey Guys,
Can anyone give me a better way to change the O2 sensor on the passenger side. It's the one in the manifold. It's on a 97 LT1. I went to a couple of shops and asked what they would charge me to do it and I have my own sensor. One guy said 80.00 and the next guy said 100.00. I said no thanks and burned rubber out of there. I know there is a way to do it, just need someone to give me some advice.
Thanks

Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
In my experiences it just depends on how rusted it is on there. Also I believe the passenger side one is the trickier one to get to.
I'd spray it over night with some PB blaster and then you may also need a little heat to get it off depending on how long it's been on there.

Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
the problem is it's going to be seized in there and probably break when you wrench on it, if it's never been replaced.
Try soaking it in Faster. I've had awesome luck with Faster and it really does work much faster than PB blaster and far better as far as I'm concerned. It's what Belle Tire uses. My friend who works there gave me a can of it to free up some ford ac lines (the same design they use for their fuel lines).
I wouldn't even try to wrench on it dry case it will more than likely destroy it and not come out. Soak it in that spray a few times and then try getting it to come out.
When I did headers years ago both of my o2's just twisted into pieces but lucky for me the exhaust was off the car so I was able to work with it and get them out.

Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
I just removed my O2s from my 96, I doubt the O2 will break off, it isn't like you are removing the manifold bolts to the y-pipe (those things usually break). Just take your time and you'll be just fine.
Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
Definitely soak it.
Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
O2 sensor socket, PB blaster, done.
I should also mention that I've never broken off an O2 sensor, be it on my car, friend's cars, customer's cars, parents cars, etc.

Re: 97 TA change oxygen sensor
I've also torn up a 02 sensor's threads using a torch to get it out of some old headers.
That being said I've had a few slide out pretty easy.
