96 z28 Help on mods

Hey guys I’m buying a 96 Z28 and Im was looking to get a little help on what mods to do first. I love car but still have a lot to learn about them. I was thinking of getting new gears for it but did not know what to get because I don’t know gear ratios. So pretty much what Im saying is I don’t want to waist money so I would likes some help on what to do first. Thanks

First off is it an A4 or a M6? Gear ratio will depend greatly on this. Some good mods to start off with would be a CAI (cold air intake) and exhaust. As far as CAI's go a Moroso or K&N would be a good choice. For exhaust, there are so many options that you really need to decide what you are looking for first. Do you want something loud? Cheap? Stainless or not? Cheap does not always mean the best so be careful when picking one. You can find lots of exhaust clips if you search on here.

Headers and gears are a good choice too but I would start off with a CAI and exhaust then move on from there.

Please don't refer to nitrous as NOS, okay Vin. NOS is a brand name of nitrous not the technical term for it.

What exhaust is on the car? I would definetly go with longtubes and a tune next. Also, spend some money getting the car running good. Do a service on it, change all the fluids, fuel filter, radiator flush, spark plugs, and wires. Since the latest model LT1 is already 10 years old I would replace almost everything then think about performance stuff. You might even pick up a little power doing maintenance work on it if it has not been done in a long time.

Nitrous done right with all the supporting mods will add lots of power but also cost anywhere from 1000-1500 dollars.

CAI, tune, ditch the flowmasters for something else. Buy some gears and have them installed (3.73s for an auto, 4.10s for an M6 in a daily driver). Get some pacesetter LTs with the y-pipe and install those if you're feeling adventurous.

Whats bad about the flowmaster I dont know much about Exhaust systems. Its a M6 With a rebuilt LT1 motor droped in it in 02 with about 20,000 miles on the motor and 74,000 on the car. You sead the 4.10s are good for a M6, why is that, like I sead im new to the whole mods with cars deal. I was thinking of getting new cams for it as well. What are some good kinds to look up? Thanks for all the help.

Any aftermarket exhaust is better than the stock system, as I've heard, even the Flowmaster. The reason people tell you not to go with that brand is because it's supposed to be dyno proven that gains are less than other catback exhaust systems. If you were going for a max effort car, I'd imagine that restriction would become larger and larger as you added more performance parts to the motor, or if you ever increased it's displacement.

As far as exhaust goes though, it's really personal preferrence as to how it sounds. You could try http://www.ls1sounds.com. It's mostly LS1 clips, but there are some LT1 sound bits on there as well. If you like the Flowmaster, keep it, just realize that it's probably a 10 rwhp difference or maybe a little more between other brands.

As far as gears, your M6 car (I'm assuming that's what you have since you mentioned M6 gear ratios) will respond well to the 4.10's. It will mean you're shifting earlier every gear, but it really helps to wake up 6th gear a little when you're just cruising along. Though be warned it's much easier to break your 10 bolt differential with smaller gears because of the added torque multiplication, especially if you are adding some sticky tires back there.

As for other mods, if you are any kind of serious about modding your car, definately get headers, as they will be one of your biggest intial power gains, and their benefits will only improve as you keep modding the car. Definately look into the Pacesetters if you can get long tubes in your state and if you're on a budget. If money isn't a problem you can look into some stainless header options from Kooks.

As for the cam, btw there is only one cam in an overhead valve (OHV) motor. You will need to upgrade other parts of your valvetrain to support a bigger cam. Stock components in there are pretty wimpy and only big enough for the stock cam.

I highly suggest going into the exhaust forum and reading posts in there, search the LT1 forum for cam/valvetrain threads. Do lots of homework here, as there is a wealth of very interesting information to be had for no cost to you other than your time. You'll learn a ton about cars, motors, and how to work on them yourself.

Regards,

Chris

headers really wake up an LT1, id start there. Also a cutout to unleash the beast.

If you go long tubes or mids, look into getting an over-the-valve cover wire setup. Otherwise, just use cable ties to secure the wires away from the header primaries.
