96 Steering wheel control wiring ???
96 Steering wheel control wiring ???
I have a 96 Firebird with the steering wheel controls. These are the small "modules" that have wires that run through the wheel plugged into the back of them.
I recently started having trouble with the volume button, so I removed it from the wheel, unplugged it, worked on the button and put it back in the wheel. Since putting it back in the wheel, the light has not worked. All I did was to reposition the button on the module so I am sure that I didn't hurt the bulb inside. The buttons work perfectly now (although no 'click' feel or sound) but the light doesn't work.
So I purchase another set of buttons, and put it in this morning. These buttons have the "clicky" feel, but also the light does not work.
Now, does anyone know the pin-outs for the connectors or the wiring colors for these wires? I figured I would hook my meter on the wire for the light to see if there is a problem in the wire itself. I have a set of replacement wires for the steering wheel, but don't want to have to remove the air bag and swap the wiring if I can eliminate that as the problem...
The seek (left) side has four wires going to it. From top to bottom on the connecter: Red, Blue, Pink and Black.
The volume (right) side has five wires going to it. From top to bottom on the connector: Brown, Pink, Blue, Red, Black.
Any help is appreciated!

From what I can see, a black (grd) and gray (12v) wire should power the lamp. You described some other colors that all of them don't match the schematic. Sometimes when there are small plug in electical parts, they have their own wiring color codes (the multifunction lever is an example). Lamps for both switches are fed by a common circuit, so if only one of them is not lighting up, then it must be a local connection problem in the wheel. The lamp wires branch to each switch at a connection from the SIR coil assy in the wheel.
Thanks shoebox!
I figure the problem is either two bad bulbs, or a bad connection.
I think that maybe I broke the conductor in the wire or damaged the wire in some other way when I pulled it out the first time. And I knew that since the light works on one side (the left - seek) and not on the other that it's a simple issue with that side only.
Now to figure out how to properly and safely remove the air bag module to get to the wiring.. I assume that it runs behind that module.
