96 SS stock CAI vs K&N CAI...

My 96 SS still has it's stock cold air from SLP... however I really doubt how effective it is since it does a 180 into the TB... and I think most air runs over the hood scoop and is not "rammed" in there anyways, so I'm thinking of switching to the K&N CAI... Would it be worth the money to get this? Or does the stock one work better than I think? I've never seen any pictures of anyone who still has it.. they have all seemed to switch to something or other that runs to the fender. Plus I think it cleans up the engine bay anyways.. so does the K&N cai work much better than the stock? Thanks

They are all about the same, so there is no point in switching from one to the other. Just my opinion.

I don't think the gains would warrant the money spent. You might see 5 rwhp. The LT1 SS ram air setup isn't quite as convaluted and crappy as the LS1 setup.

Really? The LS1 set up is crap? I always though it was much better....

Well thanks.. great, that saves me some money that I can put into something else now

Oh btw... since the intake does like a 180 into the TB... would buying an air foil in an attempt to straighten that out as much as possible be worth it? I don't know if air foils are BS or not... thanks

Airfoils are a waste of money. Period.

The reason the LS1 setup sucks is because the air gets split into two different tracks in the hood and that both make 360* turns and then through the airbox. I guess the only difference would be that the LT1 cars have the airbox before the bend and the LS1 has the airbox after the bends.

I'd say go with some 4.10 gears.

SS ram air

I swithched mine to a Moroso CAI because I had my intake powder coated and wanted to see more of the motor. It was also starting to crack and I don't think it ever sealed right to the hood. I had a K&N filter in the SS airbox in place of the factory filter. I always felt like the ram air worked judging by the amount of dirt and crud in the filter. As far as any horepower of et gains I don't think I gained or lost anything. If I didn't get the cai for next to nothing I would still be running the stock box. I also wanted to keep the stock ramair box in as good of shape as possible just in case these cars are worth something in the future.

IIRC, Jason Debler got a pretty decent gain in power when he put a K&N FIPK on his old 96SS.

My car made 452rwhp with a 383 and the SS airbox. I don't think it's much of a restriction.

It was proven years ago that the LT1 SS air box setup is costing .2 sec.

Same day at track, switched to a CAI and picked up .2. Same 60' times. Car was hot lapped to see if it was because of sitting. Still was .2 second faster without the stock setup.

Quite a few people back then had the same results.
