95 T/A Overheating! Help, please.

Son's '95 LT-1 T/A overheated yesterday while out shopping in 10-15 degree weather.

Midas shop says it could be a $1500 head gasket problem.

Does this make sense? I thought it might be a bad thermostat or water pump.

Fluid m/h leaked out yesterday. He re-filled it today, made it home safely from where he left it overnight, temp still running high but he shut it down before temp max'd out. Doesn't appear that new fluid is leaking out...

What do you think? Please advise before we spend $1500 on a new head gasket. Thanks in advance!!

Re: 95 T/A Overheating! Help, please.

Is there any white, thick, sweet-smelling smoke coming out of the exhaust? Is the radiator still full, or is it low again? How hot did he actually get the car? Does it miss or run poorly at all? From what it sounds like he may very well have a blown head gasket. Mine blew at this same time last year, so I know how you feel. Give us as many details as possible, and we'll help you figure out what's going on.

Talked with Midas myself earlier today.

Good news is coolant system passed pressure test.

Bad news is it most likely is a head gasket problem.

I guess I'll read the other thread posted here regarding the same subject to figure out what to do next.

Thanks all.

Im with him, shouldn't take you longer than 6 hours for your first time. Be sure to tighten the head bolts in the proper order and use some sealant.

I'd prefer to sell the car to one of you expert mechanics. I'm not that handy nor do i have the time.

What is this car worth? Please email me at rlk911@ameritech.net if you're interested.

Did you bleed the system ? If not, it will overheat like a Mo Fo. People like Midas don't understand LT-1's You gotta be an LT-1 guy to know about them

Are your radiator fans turning on? That could be it right there. The fans in my '94Z stopped working one day and it would overheat whenever there wasn't enough air flowing through the radiator, then radiator fluid would spew out the overflow tank. I rigged up a switch to kick the fans on and it was fine. I had the car looked at and they said it was either a PCM problem or a fault in a wire between the PCM and relays. It's really easy to 'hot-wire' the fans. Pull out one of the two relays and use a paper clip or something connect the battery + wire to the fan + wire.
