Post 95 camaro exhaust question

Recently I was given a 95 camaro z28 option with an LT1 engine. It has 78000 miles and is in almost excellent shape.

I have been thinking about upgrading the exhaust system from the factory one installed. What are the possibilities?

I really want to change it so that each of the four headers has its own exhaust going to the muffler with some cool pipes. I'm not interested in having the car make alot of noise but I do want it to gain a nice amount of horsepower.

Also, with a better exhaust system would I need to upgrade the standard air intake method?

I do not know much about cars. Please explain so I can understand.

Thanks.

Re: 95 camaro exhaust question

I have a 95 Z also. For the 1995 Z28's there were two types of exhausts setups:
- One had both exhaust manifolds Y into one pipe, One cat's and a single tube to the muffler.
- Apparently california 1995 Z28's had two pipes and dual Cat's.

I have the non-california single cat 95 camaro... I upgraded my stock exhaust a year or two ago to a Maganflow exhaust system.
There are several options out there, to sum it up:

Corsa - stainless steel pipes, expensive. More Refined sound.
GMMG - stainless steel pipes, expensive. Louder throaty sound, a lot of people love the GMMG sound.
2OTL - (Two pipes out the left side) Very loud, not sure how it sounds never heard it myself. Im sure some people can fill in details on the price and sound for you..
Magnaflow - Sounds great, Stainless steel pipes, half the price of the above to i think.
Flowmaster - Not stainless steel, very loud but inexpensive.

-I would post if you have a single or dual cat setup in your car ASAP. Most 95's ive seen are single cats, i havent actually seen a dual california cat 95 camaro The solutions above are for single cat setups (as far as i know).

"Also, with a better exhaust system would I need to upgrade the standard air intake method?"

No you wouldn't "have" to, but eventually you probably would want to.

I think it is single cat. It is in the shop atm so I can't check.
Can I change it to dual cat? That is what I really want to know and what would be best for dual cat.

Thanks.

Re: 95 camaro exhaust question

Mixed responses on that. Most people will probably suggest single cat is the best way to go... At least in the way of exhaust systems...

As far as the cat goes, depends on your state emissions program as well. Some visually check the cat and unless you can make it look like it's supposed to be that way and they don't know the difference I guess you would be ok. However, altering the placement is illegal just as it is also illegal to remove it.

Re: 95 camaro exhaust question

How about no cat

My particular combo is pacesetter longutbe headers w/y-pipe, & edelbrock catback. I love it. Not emissions legal, but I don't have to worry about that stuff.

You'll want a catback first though, since it's simple and easy. Just do a search for "exhaust" in the titles in the LT1 section, you'll get a ton of info on what looks good and possibly some links to soundclips.

BTW I think what you're talking about is manifolds vs. headers. Manifolds are generally what comes with the engine, are small & usually cast iron. Headers are usually tubular & much longer, and are made out of steel (sometimes stainless) and hopefully are ceramic coated.

It doesn't sound like you have a lot of automotive experience, so I would suggest just looking around here and finding out what you can before making a decision. This board has helped me realize what works and what doesn't on a car (why just throwing aftermarket parts at a car can be bad for your car & your wallet).

^^^ How do you like your edelbrock catback. Ive always been interested in one for my car but very few people seem to have it. Also do you have any soundclips of your setup.

Re: 95 camaro exhaust question

luckyou3 has a link in his sig to the different exhaust sounds.

As far as price to performance ratio, Hookers single in dual out exhaust cannot be beat. Through jegs its only 279.00. Very good quality and sounds nice aswell.

EDIT: You can select dual or single cat when purchasing exhausts through any manufacturer(as long as they make both) Best bet for exhaust is to check our for sale section and look around. "Most" people on here are reputable.

Re: 95 camaro exhaust question

I ordered mine from summit for $225. I used the 96-97 version since I didn't need the little S section that goes to the cat, next time I looked they stopped selling them, now they only have the 93-95 version for closer to $300. Unfortunately I don't have any exhaust clips, but I can tell you that it sounds quite similar to the other sound absorption type mufflers. It is a tad louder than the dynomax but still quite streetable, nothing to attract attention unless you get on it. It does have a burble sound that is unique to it, but I can't really describe it, sorry no soundclips and even if I did I don't know if it would help, recording & replaying exhaust sounds seems to distort them anyway. When I get back home in April I might try to get a sound clip or two. Not sure about hp vs. other mufflers, it does have the three small holes in the muffler instead of one large one, Edelbrock says that it increases hp but I think it probably makes you lose 1 or 2, lol. No popping or rasping noises, which I like. One thing I really liked is that when I started it up with open headers, and then put the exhaust on, it didn't ruin the tone quality. You could still hear the open headered LT1 behind the muffler.
