I was reading through the February 2002 issue of Hot Rod and they state on page 35 that "1995: LT-1 powered F-bodies built for sale in California get dual catalytic converters and a 10hp boost, bringing the total to 285". I was under the impression that dual cats didn't come along until 1997. Am I wrong?

My 96 Firebird has dual cats. I believe that they started in 95. Since when you are looking for headers, 95-97 are usually lumped together.

Some 95's have them, but in 96 they all had them.

California cars got them in '95. Everyone else got them in '96.

I own a 95 Z28 California car M6 with a single cat. My friend's 95 California A4 car has the dual cats. Not sure if it solely depended on type of transmission or not. Mine was built in Aug of 1994 so it was an early 95.

I remember the debate about OBDII in a 95 and I was thinking the consensus was that it would have been way too much trouble to get a dual cat car to work with OBDI since, unless I'm wrong, don't dual cat cars have 4 O2 sensors?

The debate was not that dual cat 95's exist-they do. It was whether that they were OBD1 or OBD2. They are OBD1 and there was a California guy that confirmed his dual cat car was indeed OBD1.

You can look for the presence of a cat on each of the head pipes from the exhaust manifolds and confirm that your car has RPO code NB6, which is for California emissions equipment.
