Question 94 z28 rear end noise (bumps in driveline slack)

Anyone had any experience with 1994 z28 rear end noise? The driveline seems to have some backlash (slop) and there is a noticible bumping sound under normal acceleration. It developed gradually, but continues to get worse. Is it more likely U joints or the gears? The car has 155k on it and still runs fine, no warning lights, etc. Thanks in advance.

you may have a different problem but several people have worn out rear lower control arm bushings. when going over bumps, the rear may screech or clunk. i think most of the time, the problem is worse in the colder weather.

Also, check your torque arm. Be sure both bolts are still there on the rear end housing and that the rubber bushing on the tranny end isn't worn out.

Both of these things caused similar noises in my old 3rd gen.

I had what I have heard called rear end chatter, but I never experienced it under acceleration....usually only when in reverse at idle speeds, I would get some loud clunking in the rear end. I fixed my pinion seal leak and changed the rear diff fluid and everything seems good now. I was sure that it was my u-joints, but the guy at the shop said they looked good, so it must have been just the rear diff protesting the crap gear lube that was in there.
