93s with K&N directly on TB?
Re: 93s with K&N directly on TB?
Yah guesss so. Just saw a H/C guy on here w/ a 93 whose sig said his filter was right there... and it WOULD be 150 bucks less. When I dynoed my car early on I dynoed 240rwhp and 297rwtq. When we dynoed with the TB OPEN... as in no elbow even... 259rwhp and like 303rwtq!
No cheaper EFFECTIVE ways, other than 200 dollar FIPK?

I attempted this with the K&N 5050 1000cfm one that supposedly fits... BUT... the attachement to the Throttle body would not fix over the Thermostat housing below the throttle body. I still have the Filter, so if you find a way to do this... Please let me know... cause the 150 degree heat will not matter once you are moving..... ambient air will come into the engine bay then.

The main entrance for air, is from under the car, past the air dam, and through the trans cooler/condenser/radiator.
You will still be picking up hot air, no matter if you are sitting still, or driving.
I'd love to see some freescan or datamaster logs on your 93 with a TB mounted filter. I'm betting intake air temp will be through the roof.
Re: 93s with K&N directly on TB?
I would say that it would average at about 70 degrees in 60 degree weather. PLUS... Air temperature is a big thing... BUT.... the ammount of air and the easier it is to suck it in, makes the biggest difference. I cant find the post, but the ammount of air if you have just an elbow w/a cone connected was like 860 CFM... .if you have a CAI system it is like 750... stock air box is like 480. Now.. I can only imagine what it is if you have it on the throttle body... probably about 960 or 1000 CFM. ... This would help performance tremendously.... and if you developed a way to get air up there..... WOW. Super sucker ram air... or just some duct work.

You will suck in hot air.
Especially since the rad fans pull air through the rad and towards the engine.
Unless you drive around without a hood, you will suck hot air.

But what would be better? Hot air unless you are driving around for a while... I would imagine that it would cool down significantly after a while.... OR.... Cold air from a CAI kit.
Direct air, or air through the whole tubing system

You'd still get much warmer air while driving around because of the location. I think people are trying to say that the benefit of not having the tubing would be outweighed by the increase in temperature, even when driving.
Re: 93s with K&N directly on TB?
I have a moroso CAI and trickflow elbow now but I would love to do this and use both, to see the diffrences. Does anyone have a pic of this done? I would love to see how this was acomplished. Also what K&N part numbers they used.

Re: 93s with K&N directly on TB?
In one of my GM high tech mags, they had this same problem. They had a filter directly on the tb but it was sucking hot air. They put a cai on it and picked up a good amount of hp.
The small amount of airflow that you MAY lose, will not overcome the savings in temp the cai will afford you. Colder air is more dense, therefore, you will actually be getting more air in at the same or even less airflow(up to a point obviously)
You don't have to spend 200 bucks on a CAI. Buy one used for cheap(I bought my Moroso for 75 bucks) or make your own. Use your stock elbow, a piece of straight pipe and a prebent elbow and you would be good to go(assuming you can weld).
