72 Buick Skylark with and LT1 question.

Bought a 72 skylark off of a friend for 500 . Nice car, but was hit from the rear and has a moderate amount of body damage that can be fixed no problem. Was gonna buy the rebuilt 350 and trans for 400, but he asked if I wanted the whole car for 500. I said yes. The engine has less than 5000 miles on it and I was thinking about selling it and getting an Lt1 to put in it with a M6.

What would I need. I know I would have to have the complete harness, computer and complete engine/t56, but what about motor mounts, crossmemeber for trans, lenght of drive shaft. That sort of stuff. There is all kind of room under the hood to mess with things. Would I need some sort of cluster with lights for sensors, check engine, or maybe the stock camaro cluster retrofitted? Many questions.

I have pix of the car if someone would like to host them for me. The pix were taken by his mom with her dig cam, so they aren't great, but they are fine.

Basically, I might have a SBC with low miles on a rebuild for sale. I stress might. I might use that engine elsewhere, but I need money for this project this spring.....

Find a 1970 Buick 455 with 71 on quadrajet (800 cfm vs 70's 750 cfm) and put it in with a TH 400. It will be alot easier on your wallet in the long run and the car will have *****.

Port and match the heads, intake and manifolds along with a 2 1/2 inch exhaust setup with an x pipe and you will have a beast.

You do know that if that is the original 350, it is not an SBC. It is a Buick 350 and is a completely different engine. Not sure about the bolt pattern of the bell housing of the tranny, but it might also be different than the SBC. Otherwise, it's the same.

Re: 72 Buick Skylark with and LT1 question.

Having done an LT1 Swap into my 84 corvette there are a few isues.
Do you want A/C? If so you may need to go with the corvette A/C bracket for clearance reasons (You will need to look at your car to see)
List of what you will need
1. ECM must be VATS disabled and harness converted to 4 wire hook up. Jims performance can do the 4 wire conversion for you ( I did it my self but it is a PITA)
2. Fuel Pump (In your case you will probably need an in line that can suport the 40-50 PSI needed for the LT1.
3. You can use your motor mounts because the LT1 uses the same MM as a std. SBC.
4. Trany, again std SBC so any trany should bolt right up
5. You will need to make provisions in the radiator for the steam vent return (Some have added a fiting into the radiator hose, I had a 1/4 fiting installed directly into the radiator.
6. Any headers that will fit your car and a chevy motor will work other wise you can use shorties.

Thats all I can think of at the moment

Re: 72 Buick Skylark with and LT1 question.

Shoebox, the original buick 350 had a rod nocking and my friend took advantage of a rebuilt sbc 350. I don't think there were any issues with the trans bolting up to the sbc. Tnanx for the post. I am humbled with your presence.

ejfagala, thanx alot for the little tidbits into your install. I highly appreciate it. As for wiring, I have my friends dad that is an electrical genius and helped me make a custom wiring harness for another car. I think we have that handled. As for everything else, I thank you for your input.

jim88iroc350, I will definately check out the site when I have a couple of hours to spare. Thanx alot.
