Would you cruise around around in 6th doing about 60-70mph with stock 3.42s?

I just read in a different thread that, doing this would kill a motor? That true? Would you really be better off downshifting into 5th and cruising like that?

I'm a little concerned now because everytime I reached 60-65 i'd throw it in 6th and just cruise. Now, of course everytime I hit a hill or something, i'd downshift to get up the hill. But if I were to be cruising, i'd be in 6th and only 6th. Is that really bad?

 

It won't mess up the motor. GM put 6th gear in there to help with gas mileage. I cruise in 6th doing 70-75 all the time on the freeway. My motor is fine.

 

i do it, but like u said if theres a hill i downshift...car seems fine.

 

I did it with the stock LT1, and I do it with the 383. I like to think that it's better for the motor's longevity, since all the engine components are spinning and moving slower. As long as the oil pressure stays up and the WP is spinning fast enough to keep the motor cool at these low revs, your good.

Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic.

 

there are no hills where i live, and if i am not speeding up/slowing down alot with traffic...

i'll cruise at 55 in 6th gear...

just don't floor it to accelerate, downshift instead

 

I use it all the time. When I first got my car I couldn't ever remember that 6th was there, because I was so used to my 5 speed truck. Now when I'm driving my truck I look for 6th gear.

 

If you are going 55+ use 6th gear.

 

I use sixth if I'm going more than 40.
