550rpms when idle in gear please read !!

What can cause rpm's to be low at idle. I recently went to the dealer for low oil pressure and they told me that sence my intake elbow is ripped on the bottom that it was causeing it to run rich causeing blow by and ruining the oil so they changed the oil and the pressure was up to normal. Now Tonight I had to do some runing around and when I stoped at a light I noticed the engine was idleing at 500 to 550rpms I put it in nutral and the rpms went up to normal. WTF Can anyone give me some ideas as to why this is happening? Also I haven't replaced my intake elbow yet. I am ordering a trickflow one this weekend. The intake letting a small amount of air in wouldn't screw up the idle rpm's would it? Thanks Anthony

The throttle body still decides how much air goes into the motor, but if there is a rip, you will have more air then the computer thinks is there, which would lean out the mixture, not richen it. Either way, it wouldnt cause anything oil related.

I was told by Ion Sultan the owner of MAdz28.com (custom computer tuning) that the normal idle on a camaro was 550 at idle and 650 when in neutral.

I am sorry thats what I mean lean then the computer/o2 sensors would compensate and add more fuel causing it to run on the rich side right? The dealership said that 650 was where it shoud idle in park and in gear 600. Man this is driving me crazy thinking that somethig internaly could be screwed up.

Thanks for the replys guys. I talked to Ion and indeed that is the normal idle speed. I guess I dont notice it untill the car has been running for a while and sence my exhaust is supper loud ( hole in flowmaster) and that I have headers and no cat . I can feel more of whats going on with the motor with the exhaust I have. I Sometimes get paraniod over stuff like thislol I am prayin that my motor is in good shape for a new cam and valve train. If anything was wrong and my motor needed a rebuild I would have no money left to do it not to mention beeing without a car. Other than my paranoia the motor pulls great thanks again

Not exactly. The o2s might compensate a little, but the difference with a tear would be negligible. If it added fuel, it would even it out, not make it rich.

With a hole in your intake elbow, it won't run like it should. Besides it messing up what the computer is trying to read as airflow, you are also pulling dirty, unfiltered air into your engine. I would put this on your priority list to fix. You say you are paranoid about the shape of your engine, yet you causing potential long term harm to it by letting this go.

Re: 550rpms when idle in gear please read !!

I am ordering the new intake elbow this weekend and the only reason I let it go in the first place is the tear was very small right at the front where it goes on the TB. From what I could see I thought it was sealing. I don't just let problems go. Sometimes I have no choice but to wait till I have enough $$. I don't know if this is a related to my problems or not but for a while now when I am driving about 40 mph when I let off the gass and it is decellerating the rmps go up and down a few times (like 100 rpms up and back up and back) until I slow down with the brake. I dono has anyone had that happen to them?

Dang it I thought so Stupid techs at the dealer were just b/s ing me. The what the heck causes fuel smell in the oil ?

I had a torn intake elbow and the car ran like crap. Combined with a bad plug and wire Replacing the intake elbow fixed the low/crapy idle problem.

Fuel.

When you let off of the accelerator the engine creates the most vacuum. If there is a tear in the elbow, it is going to try very hard to pull air in from that tear. Because the tear is between the MAF and the engine, the computer cannot accurately determine how much air is coming in. The computer needs this accuracy to make your engine run right.

You have an item that needs repair. I suggest you get this fixed and then ask questions if the problems are still there.
