400+rwhp thru stock 3.42's

just wondering if 400+rwhp would destroy stock 10-bolt 3.42's on Drag Radials? what about 3.73's? I'm just looking for best strength/reliability without going to a 12-bolt (which is so much more money than i wanna spend haha) i have a 6-speed and want the best price/performance i can get.

4.10's just seem like they're too prone to breaking.....

a set of motive 3.73's might be good if the strength is right

thanks!

Of course it's pushing the limit. I personally think 4.10's put too much leverage on a 10-bolt. That's why I'm sticking with 3.73's when the time comes.

But then with the 10-bolt it's hit and miss. Some people get good ones and some get bad ones. I know a guy on here that has managed to break his 10-bolt several times with only a CAI and cat-back exhaust. But yet I've got 185 passes down the track with my stocker and it hasn't shown any signs of giving up yet.

I also met a guy in Texas recently that's still running his stock rear with a built LS1 that puts down 440+ to the wheels N/A, and he's also used a 100 shot of N20 through it. Granted, he's changed gears a few times and the current set is screaming for mercy..

The 3.42's are stronger than all the other gears except for probably the stock 3.23's which are very strong also. I would stick with the 3.42's and just no 5000rpm drop clutch launches and I think it'll be ok but I could be wrong. Now an auto LT1 can't break it with 3.42's and 500++RWHP with the hose b/c it makes 420+on motor and a 150 shot = spinning 1.58 60's still kicking over 250+passes.

what are examples of signs the rear is on its way out?

I thought it was the kinda thing that you cant notice while its going out.....like it's broken or not, on or off, up or down

You could go with 4.11's instead of the 4.10's.. 4.11's have only 37 ring gear teeth compaired to 41 on the 4.10's.. Thats the rout I took, you wouldn't believe the difference looking at them.. The 4.11's look MUCH stronger.. Hmm let me see if I can find that picture...

Hey Man,
I know you said you wanted stregth, but It also depends on the cam that you select to get you to that 400 rwhp range(if you use a cam) In my experiece, you'll want to step up to at least a 373 gear for a large size cam in the 230 range.
I drove my car with stock 342 with the cam I have now, and it did fine, but launching the car was hard for me. You had to rev so high and then it would still bog, if it didn't bog, it would roast the tires.
Once I stepped up to a 373, the cam drives like a dream, launching the car is sooo much easier and it puts the car in the cam's powerband.
Hope this helps.

Tim
