400 rwhp with a Hot Cam...possible?

How possible is it to hit 400 rwhp with a GM Hot Cam with AFR 195 LT4 street heads and a stock bottom end?

I know somebody who did the LT4 conversion on his 97 TA using the Hot Cam and the AFR LT4 street heads/1.6 rr/LT4 intake. Other mods include FLP long tube headers, Borla exhaust, LT4 km, Meziere H2O pump, and a few other mods. He recently dynoed his car and made 357/325 on a Mustang dyno, and was running a bit rich, around 14:1, on a base tune from PCMForless. His car is an A4 with the stock convertor.

With a good tune, how far off from 400 rwhp do you think he is?

Hot Cam = 400 rwhp, not likely. Maybe 400 at the crank.

I think if you had someone port the AFR heads for you, instad of AFR, you could come close. You sure would have a nice tq curve if you could reach 400rwhp with the hotcam though.

Here's a couple links for his dyno sheets:

His torque curve looks really good, but the numbers are a little on the low side.

Keep in mind his car was dynoed on a Mustang Dyno. I have heard that Mustang Dynos usually show lower numbers than Dynojet dynos.

Just a side note: The AFR heads kick ***.

I'd say that a hot cam kit with AFR's would probably put out between 350 and 370 at the wheels. Broad range but it all depends on the tune, engine condition, etc. I'd say it would have to see some spray to hit the 400 rwhp mark.

Re: 400 rwhp with a Hot Cam...possible?

Got a buddy with a '96 GS Vette (elect. water pump, shorties, Flowmasters, LT1 Edit.. runs good), Hotcam and mildly ported heads (LT4 naturally.. short side radius, bowls done)... He hit about 370RWHP. Peak was slightly over 6400rpm. This was up about 35RWHP over his pre-modded heads.

For comparison I run a totally stock exhaust, stock LT4 heads (conversion), Hotcam, 100K mi. cats, A4, '96 Vette and pull about 305-310RWHP with converter unlocked (peak at 6400..typical Hotcam). I think I had my Grandma' do that pull . It does run smooth. For a kick I like a bit of N2O... 422RWHP on the juice (TNT 100 shot).

The HotCam would be hard pressed to do 400RWHP. Maybe with really good heads and long tubes. But it would take a very well thought out combination. If you do it.. let me know.

It can be done but it is alot of work, heads/compression need to be there!!

I've seen it been done in a 383 LT1 with a hotcam and ported LT1 castings. But thats about it. It put down something like 408rwhp if my memory serves me right

If it can be done on a 383, then a 350 should be able to do it since very little hp is gained with the added cubic inches.

if you are only trapping 109 you aren't over 400rwhp unless your car has another car on it while drag racing.

I'd have to agree that the dyno #'s look a little high for your times. Your trap speed as pointed out tells the story. Mines been on the dyno many times, when it went 11.93 @ 114mph, it showed 355rwhp through a Yank 3600 converter. What kind of 60ft. times are you cutting?

1.7's are really not worth the hassle. Compression helps and I'm adding a little myself in the near future.
