4 Bolt Main Stock?

Upon tearing apart my motor, I've come to find that my car has a 4 bolt main instead of the normal 2 bolt main...My car is the average basic Z28, and was a late 93 car...I know in late 94,early 95 some random LT1's came this way, but my car is a late 93, dubbed 94...It is the original motor apparently since it's block id matches the VIN number...

My question is any other cars come like this? My car is not a LT4, and it seems odd that there was no work done to the car previous from the looks of it other than a CAI which I was told was only purchased cause the stock replacement from the dealer was more than the CAI...

I'm wondering about this as well. I just pulled mine down to find it has a 4 bolt main. It is an early 95 car. To the best of my knowledge it still had the original engine in it.

Joe.

yeah some late 94's early 95's are known to have come with it, but a late 93 is weird

I have a 93 as well and it has a 4 bolt main. I discovered this a few years back when replacing the rear main seal. It has the matching vin as well. I guess I just got lucky!

It's a random thing. GM has been known to throw whatever they have available on a car at any moment. Could be that they were waiting on a shipment of 2 bolt blocks and they had plenty of 4 bolt ones to spare.

Seems mostly on camaro's though for some reason. I've yet to see any stock 4-bolt main LT1 firebirds. *shrugs*

I discovered my old 1994 z28 was a 4-bolt main, upon teardown to rebuild at 125,xxx. It kinda surprised me to see that.

My buddy who works for our local GM Dealership was there during the teardown, told me the exact same thing shoebox said. I kinda thought he was bsing at the time, but it looks like there is some truth to what he said.

GM did this alot in the late 60's. I was an NCRS judge and there are plenty of documented cases where supposedly 4-bolt 427 blocks (designated for solid lifter engines like my 427 435hp tri-power engine in my 67 and the L-88 engines) that were installed in the lower hydraulic lifter 390 and 400hp optioned vettes.

The best example was when a factory fire limited the availability of the SBC vettes getting the rather plain hoods. GM simply install the BBC 'stinger' hood with monotone paint scheme on small block optioned vettes. As I recall there were over 50 of these produced.

There are many more examples of GM going to the parts bins that they had in front of them at the time when a car came down the assembly line.
