Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
Hey guys, I just came across a set of 4.10s. I know that everyone says that 3.73's are better for the A4 than 4.10s, but I thought the 4.10s would be better for the quarter mile. Your responses are appreciated.
Re: Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
4:10s are good in an A4 to just over 120mph with a stock sized tire. You will go faster with them then 3.73s in the quarter. I had them in my A4, loved em. Highway driving was a bit of a bear due to the extra rpms with an already loud exhaust, but i didnt mind.
Re: Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
I suppose I have enough power to make it go into fourth due to speed in the quarter. Is going into overdrive a bad thing in the quarter versus going into fourth on the freeway full throttle?
Someone told me it was bad to go into the quarter in fourth gear because you lose rpm's. I am confused and want to be certain of the outcome before making the change.

What kind of times are you running on your current gears?
Use the MPH to calculate where you are in the RPM band when you cross the line. It is very possible that going to 4.10s will cause you to shift out of your power band and actually hurt your (track) performance.
As for street, I think they'd make the car fun to drive (screwing around) but a real pain on the interstate. I've has 3.73s in two of my A4s and I've been very happy with them.

Re: Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
I am having a hard time accessing that link but I hope it gives answers about speed in each gear. I don't want to shift beyond my power curve but if I put these gears in I would reprogram it accordingly. Can you still shift out of your powerband under certain circumstances even with a reprogram like LT1 edit? You mentioned that you have had 3.73's and you loved them. I have never heard any complaints about a4 people running 3.73's, I just wonder if they would perform better at the track aside form their negative attributes.
Like I said, I picked up the 4.10s at a deal and currently have stock 3.23s in the rear presently. My time is 12.3 at 114. I am looking for all out performance at the track but I never heard of shifting out of my power range. Further input would be appreciated

Re: Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
i have 2.73's out back and going very soon to 3.73's. Everybody always says go 4.10s cause you got overdrive, but I have seen many cars with 3.73s perform well. For my STREET/strip application 4.10's are not my cake especially with gas prices here in CA.
As for keeping your powerband, just leave the car in drive, not overdrive.
In one magazine, an LS1 put in 4.10s and dropped about .5 and gained like 6mph, but that is an LS1.
I had 4.10's in my Mustang, the Mustang was shi**y, bad year of production in 96 unfortunately but it gave the Mustang a really needed go in some areas.
If I were you, depending upon installation methods, I would probably go 3.73's because they are more streetable yet give you what you need in the quarter and out of the hole. If your wallet permits and you have the means, give the 4.10's a shot- dont like 'em, throw em on Ebay.
Hope this helps. Go to a rear end shop and ask them too and sit on it for a few days.

Re: Are 4.10's too much for my auto?
From what I've heard, 3.73 is the good ratio for an A4, and the 4.10's are the good ones for the M6. I'm in the middle of the A4 -----> M6 swap....and 4.10's are going in.

Let us know how it turns out.
Don't forget to calibrate the speedo and odo.
