4.10 Gear Swap Vibration Figured out... I think....

Well, ever since I swapped in my 4.10's this spring I've had a NASTY vibration at 70mph+... I tried everything, swapping DS's, new yoke's, new tires, balancing tires, pinion preload, etc...

well, this past week I broe down and bought all the tools I needed to rebuild a rearend... I've got a BS in ME.. I can figure out how to setup a gearset

So.... what did I find...

Pinion Depth was .020 too deep into the housing, tolerence is +/- .002...
Carrier Bearing preload was non-existent.. the carrier literially fell out into my had when I touched it.

So.. after adding .020 worth of shims to the Pinion and spending 2 hours resetting the carrier shims to get the backlash and preload correct... I think I've got the problem fixed...

I'll post tomorrow for sure... It started raining out.. so I can't test drive my car.... figures

but hey, it's taught me how to setup gears... and now I've got the tools... hmm... maybe I can make some $$...

So did that fix it? So few people ever post the solutions to their problems on this board.

I just had 4.10's installed last week and now have a very bad vibration at 70+ MPH. I have heard that the DS may be the problem, but for some the aluminum DS didn't help at all. Before throwing more money at the car, I'd like to know if putting the rear into spec solved your vibration issues.
