3rd gen vsLT1?

"1/8th or stop light to stop light. A strong running L98 is gonna eat an LT1."

"Never lost to an LT1 below 120mph anywhere. I ran one on top once and he slowly pulled on me from 125ish to 140ish and I let up. But I Dominated him from 0-120!"

These are a couple of quotes I saw in 3rd gen tech and now I'm concerned. There are a couple of L98's around here that I didn't give much consideration to before...but I don't want to get embarASSed by them either. How true are these statements?

My friend had a 1984 vette with an l98 i believe and I'd walk all over him no matter where we ran. He got it up to 150 though, which suprised the hell out of me. It was the 3 speed auto and had a couple little things done to it(exhaust, etc.) I don't think any stock l98 is going to even hang with an lt1. They aren't slow, but I think at best they are a high 14 second car.

I just so happen to have an L98 87 IROC and I've personally handed about 1/2 a dozen LT1 owners their a$$ with it. With about 140k on it and stock, except a gutted cat and a Ravin muffler at that. It ran a 14.43 at Mason-Dixon, Hagerstown, Md. with 1.8-1.9 60's. What's a stock LT1 pull ???

Hmmm. Well at that time everything including vette's was being whipped by mustang gt's and now LT1's are beating the same gt's but I'm not saying that the L98's are not fast.

stock for stock a 3rd gen wont beat a LT1 in the 8th or 1/4..not even close...just like stock for stock a LT1 wont beat a LS1 in either

Cutting a 1.8 60 and only running a 14.4 I highly doubt u beat any LT1s...with a 1.8 60 every stock LT1 should be in the mid/higher 13's....

I had an 88 IROC Z 350 which I sold to buy my LT1 if that tells you anything.
They have alot of torque but nothing on the top end.
I have to admit I think the IROCs look better than the 4th gens but performance wise its no contest.

1984 was the crossfire injection, not a great performance motor by any means. From what i've seen, a average L98 Fbody runs high 14's. L98 vettes are usually in the mid 14's. Only diffrence in the engine is the heads (aluminum on vette), also air intake and exhaust, and the Vette is lighter, so that explains why they are quicker

If you have a LT1, and know how to drive, then a Lt1 will beat a L98 stock for stock, and also beat a l98 with basic mods (exhaust, air intake etc)

A l98 will almost always take a Lt1 right off the line, presuming both have traction, because the L98 has more low down torque, but when the L98 gets to about 5k it can't breath anymore, and looses a lot of power.

Raced a guy on the E way with an L98 vette, from about 50-110 or so. I gave him the jump and walked him hard all the way by. I slowed back down and gave him the thumbs up and he was giving me one of those thumb and pointer finger squeezed together moves like I just barely inched passed him. So I'm like alright we'll show him this again. We do the same thing but I keep in it a little longer on the top end, same outcome just worse. My car was bone stock at the time and I had my 210lb buddy with me. The guy in the vette was alone. I doubt he had anything done to his car either. It did sound nice though so he might have had an exhaust thrown on there.

I got jumped out of the hole unexpectedly a while back at a stop light, but I also underestimated the 89 IROC. Once I hit 2nd it was all over. Don't know if any mods on his. only chip, CAI and exaust on mine.

I used to have a '91 Formula with a bolt on L98, and I did run across a dog LT1 M6 once that I could pull on. However, a friend of mine picked up a '95 Z-28 auto while I had the Formula. As I mentioned, I had nearly every bolt on that you could get, he had a Moroso CAI and Flowmaster muffler. At the local 1/8th mile track, I could pull 8.80s all day and the best he could cough up was a 9.3. Now, on the street as these guys are talking, yeah right. Not unless you have went internal with the L98. This same '95 auto that ran a half a second slower than me at the track put a whoopin on me from a slow roll on the street(had a good two car gap between us when we let out and it wasn't getting any smaller). So, should you worry about an average L98? Nah, not on the street.

i rode in an 88 iroc the other day, it ran decent but i could kill him, then my buddy raced him in a stock 95z, the 95 burnt pretty bad out of the hole, but by about the 1/8th mark, he left the iroc in the dust
