396 Questions

Im thinking about building a 396 stroker, but I was wonder if my GM 847 was to small for it? Do any companys make any cams bigger then the 847 for our cars? Also my heads/intake have a pretty big port job to, will my heads flow that motor or should I get bigger valves put in and larger port work if possible!?! I want a bigger cam then the 847 if they make it.

Re: 396 Questions

Usually stock heads are not enough on a 396. You going with a $600-$800 Forged crank and pistons that have no overbore replacement.

A Custom cam would be the way to go, but why not do a 383 with a Scat or Eagle Cast crank. That will be more than you need and less $$$$

agreed. and yes i think the 847 will be a little tame for a 396. but you can contact some of the people such as joe overton and he can design one for you that will meet your needs. i think i remember a guy about a year ago hitting 450 rwhp on stock bottem end n/a.

I bet Bret(SStokerAce) can design a cam to meet or exceed that number from what Ive seen recently. When I rebuild my motor he will be the first guy I talk to about cam/valvetrain options.

Re: 396 Questions

You don't always need a huge cam in a 396 either.... There is lots of piston speed in there so a good set of heads will do the deal. I'm build a 396 now for a tame setup 2800 stall, 3.23 gears.... and that cam duration wise is really tame. The combination of all the parts should make that puppy do about 500+rwhp.

Small heads need more cam, bigger heads need less. A smaller cam is easier to drive so it's all what you want out of the thing.

Re: 396 Questions

Heres the link to the kit that Im going to buy. I guess Ill just have to get the flow numbers to my heads and get a cam based from there. The valves should be big enough though right ? And when you get the aftermarket oil pan is there any clearance issues with that when putting motor back into car?

Re: 396 Questions

Whats the difference in clearance issues as far as the 396 and 383? Also power difference?
