383 stroker peaks at 5100, driving me nuts!!

heres the setup...its a Golen 383, with Golen's 236/242 cam, 585/540 lift 112lsa. LE2 heads, 914 valve springs installed at 1.800, crower 1.5 rockers. OBD1 PCM, LTCC, 1.75" Longtubes, 3" exhaust with 2.5" tails, tpis 58mm tb. Went on a dyno tune with Bryan (pcmforless), he set a/f to 13 (was mid-14s). motor peaks out at 5100 with something like 325hp. Bryan thinks its valve float...I had a couple of the springs out of the car and they tested at 340 open pressure and 140 seat pressure, which according to Chad @ Golen is right where he wants it to be. Did a leak down test on two cylinders, its 15%. I dont know what to do anymore, this is driving me crazy! Chad wants me to lash the rockers a little noisy, and try it...right now theyre a hair under 1/2 turn past zero lash, the speedshop that put it all together did rockers for me and my friends many times on my previous setups, and never had a problem...what else can I try??

Sorry to hear that man, Did you degree the cam. One other thing that cam has more lift on the intake than exhaust? either way i think that is low. did you get the heads directly from lloyed? how much KR on your runs?

theres no KR, heads came directly from lloyd...I didnt touch the cam, Chad @ Golen installed it for me, all the speed shop had to do was slap the heads on and drop the motor in..

That lobe, with that spring and that low of seated pressure WILL NOT WORK. You need about 30lbs more seated pressure.

Team that up with you putting a 1/2 turn into the rockers and it's even worse. It needs to be closer to 1/8th of a turn or zero lash

Listen to him! Herter is right.

This is why Lloyd sells a matched up head/cam package.

Sorry, maybe someone can explain a dual pattern cam that has a bigger intake lift than exhaust and a difference that large.

Never mind. Found them in the Drag Race section. My bad.

The exhaust lift is not as important, especially if you have more exhaust duration than intake duration.

I would certainly think something is wrong, my hotcam did 355 and it peaks at 6k exactly. 383 with ported heads and herter tune.

Your peak is at 5500, not 5100. 325rwhp is really bad for those mods and probably only 315rwhp after you correct them to sae. Did the pull end at 6100 or does it really fall off that hard?

Maybe you should go with a cam from Bret, then you know it will work PERFECT with those heads.

You should still be within 10-15 rwhp or so, of a Bret cam....(I know Bret and have ran one of his cams in a cutomers Vette, so I'm a little biased and would always recommend his custom cam first). But, sence you have already ordered one (847), I will say I tested a "847 cam" with my current combo, and made 443 SAE Rwhp. So, they can make power in a stroker..
I would look for atleast 370 unlocked (depending on conveter) and 400 locked after tuning as a minimum...You do have a heavier rear so, there is some loss their.

Good luck and keep us posted....

Re: 383 stroker peaks at 5100, driving me nuts!!

heres an update...got the car back saturday, change the cam, lifters, and injectors. On datamaster, its pulling more air then it was before at upper rpm's, but step by step playback still shows rpm's jumping from frame to frame. Im going to order new valve springs today, hopefully that will be the end of it. Cam that came out got pretty beat up, heres a pic of the worst lobe

Thats some serious valve float, you are very lucky that a valve didnt hang open too far. It almost looks like the cam wasnt hardened...lol

I had a cc 305 with wore out springs float pretty good and the lifter grooves were only half as seep as that. Of course the stock pistons didnt like the steel valves .
