Have you prelubed the engine?
Make sure and turn the ignition on but not turn over the engine at least 2 time to pressurize the fueling manifold.
I went over my checklist about 5 times before I started up my 383 to make sure it was right the first time. Mine started up like I had just parked it the night before.
Now what to do once started is another post...

nah, just make sure all the fluids are up, prime fuel pump as stated above, it will smoke for a while burning off all the oils on the ehaders from you touching them or spilling stuff on them. just make sure no leaks after it starts. and, watch the coolant temp closely. dont want to figure out you got an air pocket and overheat the engine. have you bleed the air out of the coolant system already?
oh, if you prelubed the motor with a tool, it'll start up pretty quickly and run like it should very quick. maybe a couple chuggles, but clear right up. if you havent prelubed the engine/valvetrain, it'll start a little rough while its pumping up the lifters for a good few seconds or 10 or so. but then should smooth back out. have you researched the diff. methods of breaking in an engine? I believe in the rev it and drive it somewhat hard right off the bat. but look up the different ways. see what you think. the ony difference is makeing sure the rings get seated FAST.
