383 Questions...should I or not?

Hi All,

Well my '95 Z's LT1 spun a rod bearing and warped the crank...
I've been thinking of doing a re-build soon anyway...guess this made up my mind for me...

A couple of questions... Combo Motorsports has a great looking 383 crate engine package w/ stage 2 heads for approx. $5900 shipped and with core...

Would I be better off, Rebuilding my original 350 LT1 (150,000 miles) to a 383 with all the goods....or is the crate engine the better value?

I'm sorta in the deciding stages of what to do...

Any help would be appreciated...

if you get the crate motor from them then you dont have to do all of the work

that is great if you want to and it is a good price, but myself i dont trust anyone to build my motor except me

cuz if it screws up i did it and i have to take responsibility for it

Hi TDOG,

That sounds like a good price. I have seen similar from Golens. If I had spent the money for stage 2 heads I would have spent that much or more for parts and machining. I did do forged parts but would only save about 1,000.00 going cheap on the bottom. I think you may get a more proven combination that way. It would probably be easier on your nerves.

That crate motor sounds pretty good...as for reusing the stock block you can but if it were me I'd go with the crate motor.

Just something to check... "with core" usually means a functioning replacement stock engine. They may or may not want your engine in the shape its in, and if they don't want it, that price could go up.

FWIW, I spun a rod bearing too...I'm rebuilding my current setup. The price advantage that I have over you though is I have a friend porting my heads for free...

But for reference...you can see what I'm looking at...

Dave your pistons are running you 982 bucks???? and 589 for your camshaft????

Granted I've haven't priced 383 parts in about 4 years but those two seem EXPENSIVE.....

Get a new short block w/4-bolt main. Have it balanced and blue printed. Have heads done with bigger valves, RRs. Put in a decent cam, new lifters, oil pump, etc.

Use your old block for an anchor.JMHO
