383 Questions
Alright, I have lots of plans for my car, but I am kinda taking everything in so many different directions. I keep seeing all of this 383 talk on the boards and I am becoming more interested in it.
Right now my mods include moroso cai, but I have my car in the shop getting fitted with some long tubes. I wanna get the most out of the car and I was thinking if a 383 would do it? Those who have 383 setups what kind of gains are you getting and how much (if you dont mind me asking) did you spend on the kit?
I have heads ready to be ported and a xe 224/230, but with a stroker I dont know if that would work? I figure I have something along the lines of 3k in the bank and a few hundred in my house, plus I will be getting a job in april or may.
My car is a 1994 z28 and for the most part it only drives around town, to school and when I get around to it the track, so it wont be seeing 1000's of highway miles and such. I tried the search but it didnt come up with the info I wanted so I dunno maybe I missed something. I also thought of going through a performance garage for the kit, I am pretty sure they will pass me on emissions as long as they do the work, but I will talk to them about that before I spend tons on a stroker kit.
Thanks for the help.

Im in the middle of building mine right now and I pieced my kit together for about $650. That is a eagle cast steel crank and eagle 5140 rods and Kieth Black pistons. I got the crank and rods from Seco performance and the pistons from summit. I am hoping with Loyd Elliot heads to make around 380RWHP and still be sorta streetable. I went with six inch rods for more torque and relieve a little stress on the motor.
As most people on here will tell you, the stroker kit isn't half of what you are going to spend. That $3000 will get you started. Expect to pay $500-$1000 on machine work alone. If you are not experienced at engine work you will need someone to assemble it. $400+. Port work for your heads $300-$500+. Roller Rockers, valves, pushrods, lifters, valvesprings ect...$600. Injectors, fuel pressure regulator, bigger fuel pump $500. Gaskets and quality bolts $300 and the list goes on. These are just rough figures but gives you an idea of what you would be in for. Expect to pay $6000+ for a good stroker and another $3000 on a tranny and 12bolt rearend to hold that power.
Go ahead and have your long tubes installed, and your cam. You will need to get some tuning done afterwards. $ 3,000.00 will not touch all you will need to do a stroker 383. If you have money left over start on your suspension system, a good rebuilt tranny, and a 9" or 12 bolt rearend. All of that will have do be done before you will reap the full benifits of a good built 383.
A 'budget 383' for someone that is not an advanced mechanic will nickle & dime you to death, and in the long run, you will likely spend the same oe more than dropping the cash up front for a quality crate motor from one of the well known builders.
Save your cash, or take a loan and call the guys at Nu-Tek or Lingenfelter. Get it done right the first time and you'll have more time to drive the car and enjoy it...

I have a phone number to a local place that can build you a forged 383 for $16xx or a hypereutectic 383 for about $12xx. This includes strip down, all internals, all gaskets, balance, decking, and reassembly.
Let me know if you're interested! This is a VERY renound local performance shop...they just have great prices... It may cost you less to ship and have this place work on it than to have someone near where you live do it...
