383 new engine breakin?
383 new engine breakin?
I did a search came up with alot of suggestions to do,The mechanic at the shop saia i should just start it up,dont have to prime the motor at all,He said it will wash away the oil barrier in the motor.I thought you should pull the opti coil wire and fuel injector fuse an turn the motor over. Also do I need to rev the motor up to 2500 rpm to break in cam? Please help me Doing this tommorow Thanx in advance.

He told you WHAAATTTT!!! Yes dude get that oil pressure up in the motor. Lack of oil in there for just a few sec. can make an new bearing look 80k old. What you do is leave the plugs off the motor and turn it over til the pressure builds then intsall the plugs and start her up. Youd DON't wanna just start her up because for one thing the car might not start up right away in the first place. Then what? I'm surprised a mechanic told you that.
As for the cam.....just break it in with the motor. For the firt 500 miles you don't wanna rev anywhere above 3k. Try to keep the motor above 1500 though varying your rpm's Don't let the car sit and idle for long to...such as in traffic.
I would cahnge oil after first 15 -20 minutes or so. Then again at 500. Start off with regular dino oil (10-30). Then after 500 go to a synthetic.

I agree that you want to get your oil pressure up before you try to start. In addition to removing the coil wire I also removed my injector connectors so I would not be blowing a lot of raw fuel through the motor.
In my opinion you should be able to drive above 3000 RPM just take it easy and no full throttle runs for the first 500 miles.
I would break the motor in with petroleum based oil for at least 6,000 miles before I started using synthetics. You need to have your motor broken in completely before using synthetics.

Deffenently get the pressure up....a pressurized canister is the best method but cranking it over is better than nothing.
Initial startup...run the engine 15-20 mins varying rpm from 1500-2500. Then change the oil and filter (dino oil 10w30). Run the next 300 miles or so varying rpm up to 4000 or so....then change the oil again using the same 10w30 dino....run that for 2000-3000 miles. I would go to a good 10w40 synthetic after that. I like to get at least 1000 miles on the motor before really pushing it to the limit.
