383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
my idle speeds from madz28 are currently set to 725/750 for gear/neutral. is that a little low? i seem to be idling ok in park but when i put it in gear, the RPM's get low and it acts like it wants to almost cut off....then surges when i try to give it a little gas to level it out.
i would just like to know what some other 383 idle speeds are.
thanks!

Yeah, it's my daily driver and I drive about 40 miles/day so I wanted to keep the cam pretty mild....got lots of good low-end torque too
Anyway, those idle speeds you mentioned are for stock LT1 right? not a 383 with a different cam, etc.? The guy that did my rebuild is thinking it should more in the 800-850 range.

I have mine set to 900 RPMS and its been that for about a year. I like it because I am m6 and have to give it little throttle to start moving.

Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
Part of that might be due to a stock stall (don't see one listed in your sig) so you don't need to stand on the brakes at the light. Mine is an M6 and programmed idle is 950 or 975 with a GM847 ish cam on a tighter LSA.

Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
It technically isn't my daily car, but honestly could be. The locker took some getting used to and the SPEC IV F disk engages real quick, but the car still gets almost 17-18mpg in stop and go traffic. Right now on a tank with 95% hwy and a couple WOT runs its probably sitting at about 24-26mpg but I will check that after work today.
Comfortable is relative. The car has a rod-end suspension, chassis mount tq arm, all poly engine/trans mounts and a detroit locker. I realize that I am not driving a cadillac, but personally I think the car is tolerable if you don't mind some clunks and strange turning habits. The car runs around on 275s in the rear and skinnies up front, no sway bar etc so its no autox car by any stretch. Personally I enjoy how the car shakes at idle and its won a 'best sounding' award for exhaust at the Midwest F-body meet this year.
I hope to get some idle and driving clips this week, but they will probably just be audio since that is alot easier on the server for hosting.

Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
TQ,
I have a 2500 stall, but I forgot to put it in my sig...just updated...thanks! So i guess my first thing to try would be upping my idle a bit and seeing if it does any better about acting like it wants to choke down in gear? Maybe try 850-900 and see how it reacts?

Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
If you have access to a scanner check your IAC counts and TPS voltage at hot closed loop idle. You will likely need to open up the throttle blades via the throttle stop screw to get the IAC counts back into the 40 range at hot idle and then you will need to adjust the TPS by slotting the holes to get it back into the proper range. I had issues with mine wanting to stall out at first because the IAC was pegged at 160 counts and couldn't supply the engine with enough air to stay alive.
EDIT: This may negate your problem and allow you to keep the idle where it is.

TQ,
interesting point. since im not a mechanic, you are slightly over my head but i get the idea of what you're saying and will ask my mechanic about it tonight or tomorrow when we try to work out the bugs. i know he has a Tech II scanner...will that do that scan you are speaking of?

Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
I believe that will take care of your issue. Just look for the engine being in closed loop and the engine being warm. Adjust your throttle blades until you see the IAC counts settle somewhere around 40 and then play with the TPS and slotting of the TPS holes to get it back to somewhere in the .45-.55 volt range(This may not be necessary if the voltage is correct after setting the IAC values). All of this should easily be visible on a Tech II.
Re: 383 daily drivers....what are your idle speeds?
I'm an A4 383 with a relatively small Joe O. cam 22X/23X .56X/.56X on a 111 and I idle at 950 and love it...plus it helps keep the battery charged when idling in traffic with UD pullies...
