383 camshaft recomendations

Hey, im looking for a camshaft recomendation for a 383 im looking at. Its a 383 with older Afr 195 heads (lightly cleaned up) and 10.3-1 comp. Fully forged rotating assy, stock intake manifold, and full bolt ons. It is a 6 speed car. What im looking for is a cam that will have VERY good street manors and idle charictaristics. My wife enjoys driving the car as well, so I dont want to get anything that will have a lot of surge or lack of bottom end on take off. I dont mind some lope, but good low speed is a must. I would like to keep max RPM around 6000 or under. I have a new comp 306 cam that comes with the motor. Would this be a good cam to run? Any input would be appreciated. This car is a fun street cruiser, im just lookin for a little more snap. Thanks Eric L

The manners of any cam mellows on larger displacement. What is wild in a 283 was mild in a 400... Anyway, the 306 would have better 'cruiser' manners on a 383 and would be adequate. A quick question...why did you go with so low a compression ratio?

I have almost exactly the same setup as you but with the old AFR 190 heads. I recently switched from a CC305 to a custom grind from Lloyd Elliot and it's a beast. Don't know if it would be a great DD car but has really good idle qualities and quite a bit of lope on the 108 LSA. My reccomendation is to call Lloyd up and get his input and get a custom grind from him as you will be way happier with your setup.

Thanks for the advice guys. I didnt build the motor, im buying it from a friend. It has a JE flat top piston that is .023 in the hole with a 62 or 63 cc chamber. I want to take the heads off and get them flowed. Than I can call Lloyd and get a cam recomendation. They are the older AFR 190s. So maybe when they are off I will get them surfaced to bump compression up. Eric L

Hit up lloyd it will probably be a le2 cam for driveability, hell you can use a smaller 226 cam and be just fine
