355 VS 383 -- Power Differences...

Looking to get a mother together soon and the 355 or 383 question hit me.

Looking to do a set of ported heads and GM847 cam. I'll be running midlengths through a 6spd with a good tune (MADZ28.com).

What kind of power should I see from each? Basically I'm aiming for high 11's assuming good traction. If I can do that with a 355, I'd love to (just because it's cheaper).

All else beinbg equal, not much difference. To make the most use out of a stroker you will need a bigger cam. With the right cam, you should see a power increase of 3-5% or so. However, how is it more expensive? Only if you would otherwise reuse the stock crank.

Isn't more machine work needed? If there won't be much of a power difference, I'll just do 355.

I plan on a Scat 9000, their 4340 I-beams, and some kind of forged pistons (TRW, Probe, something else?).

Since you are going to replace your entire rotating assembly the only thing you are going to save on is the clearancing needed for the stroker which is about $125.

altjar's car here has gone high 11s on stock heads and bottom end with the GM847 cam and all the boltons, so i would imagine ported heads would bring a settup like that deeper into the 11s, so a 383 wouldnt necissarily be needed, its up to you. but in replacing the rotating assembly, it seems the 383 wouldnt cost much more, and if youre going to do it once, why not?

You pick a cam after the displacement, and after you figure out what sort of operating range you want.

isn't jared running on a 12 bolt, slicks, and doing 6000 rpm clutch drops?

Re: 355 VS 383 -- Power Differences...

As others have mentioned, a 383 isn't required for high 11's. In fact, SAR2K has done high 11's with the stock long block, including cam NA.

A stroker is worth little to no more hp than a 355 - the main difference is low-end and mid torque, which will gain around 35 ft-lb peak.

I had a carbureted 3rd gen that ran 11.96 at 114 with an 8.4/1 355 with AFR 210 RR's, 847 cam, shorty 1 3/4" headers, Victor Jr., etc. . . When I switched to a 383 with 11.4/1 compression (everything else the same), it dropped to 11.30 at 121 mph, eventually going 11.09 at 122.5 mph.

I don't think slicks, but drag radials. What does that have to do with anything though?

Re: 355 VS 383 -- Power Differences...

With the 383 your average hp & tq will be higher than with a 355, which will accellerate your car faster than a 355. Plus the 4th gens aren't lightweights by any stretch so the extra torque from a 383 will require less gear & torque converter than a 355. And as others have stated if you're going to build it build the biggest ci engine you can afford and there is not enough of a price difference to justify building a 355 when you could have a 383 IMO.

lest just hope that isnt planned on being driven for much more than the drag strip, 383 beats itself to death but is a ncie toy for the track. but hey i was raised up around 350 and 355's and after seeing my dad drive his 355 around town many times with no problems other than every cop in the county knowin what he has, and still bein able to push his car into the 11's at 120+ mph in the quarter? 355 i bow down to thee... and btw thats still in street modified class with street performance tires mcqauries(sp?) not a very common tire but he says they grip good as any hes ever used. tech info, dont look at me... all i know is the proof my dads 355 lays down at the track lol.

That's not true at all. The short rod 383 in my Uncles 62 Nova has been together since 1988. My 383 has been together over 5-1/2 years with a budget build and juice.

383 "beats itself to death"??? The average piston speed is a little higher (~8%)for a 3.75 vs. a 3.48" stroke. So, I suppose there is somewhat more rapid bore wear. And if you rev it to the sky, there will be more mechanical stress, but hardly in the "beat itself to death" class.

i was just saying that jared can run those times due to having traction and a rear end to support it
try doing high clutch drops with your stock 10 bolt

i just wanted to point out that he might not necessarily get those times because jared's got some other things going on with his, that's all
o, you get your car running right yet man?

How many miles can the average 383 built with good parts, aggressive cam and some spray here and there see?

30k, 50k ??
