355 backfires and sputters terribly!

Out cruising the other day and I nailed it. Turned up to about 5500, went into 2nd, pulling strong, and then just cuts out. The entire car just cuts out. I put in neutral, crank it up, and I have the worst backfire ever.

It still runs but barely. Pull over, and just sitting at idle, it backfires. Rev' it up and it backfires through the whole RPM range. The right side header starts glowing a little bit and the car is running terribly lean. Obviously timing is too high for some reason. I unplugged the MAF to see if that would make difference in speed density mode, it didn't.

I just put this motor in a week ago and has been running just fine since. New opti, electric water pump, the works. Some how it seems like it jumped timing and now is running lean, i have no idea what would cause this. Maybe this has happened to someone before. I plan on putting the scanner on it monday and see what went wrong or what isn't working right.

damn, jumped timing was the first thing I thought of too. did you usea new chain? if nothing shows up in the scanner, Id think about trying a new map/maf sensor if you can find one to borrow from someone. if not, maybe take off the timing chain cover to see exactly whats goin on inside there just to make sure. its poss. the new opti is coming apart inside too. not likely, but possible. good luck

double roller timing chain so I doubt that heavy duty chain would jump.

It has to be something with the opti. I don't see what else would cause this.

Bad plug? Burnt through a wire?

No reason that timing should just "jump"

update:

found out what the problem was. Opti of course. One of the screws that hold on the rotor button on came off and was causing it to misfire and sputter. I got a new rotor button and im going to put lock-tite on those two screws just to make sure they don't back out again!
