nas-t-72z, what off set do you have? Do you also have the 335's on the front? Thanks... Bill...

The 555R is a "true" 315, it just has a narrower section width than many other 315 tires. I have a set at home mounted on 17x11s and they are slightly wider than the wheels and wear perfectly across the tire. Like I posted above, if you mount one of these on a narrower wheel, the section width will decrease and it will look like fits ok. Heck, for mild street/drag use it probably will work ok. But if you like to drive aggressively in the twisties, autox, or roadrace I would not do it as I'd hate to have a tire come off. Considering the fact that a set of ZR1s (with 11" rears) can be had off Ebay for around $500, I don't know why anyone would even try to run a 315 on a 9.5" wheel. One more thing, NONE of the fourth gen f-bodies came with 17x9.5" wheels, but rather 17x9". A full inch off from the minimum spec is a little too much risk for me personally.

I had custom 10" WS6 wheels made just for the purpose of
installing Goodyear GSC 315/35/17s. The setup is awesome
and works perfectly. This is also backed by conversations
with Goodyear to support the 10" width as being a safe
minimum width.

I now have about 15,000 miles on this setup and the wear
pattern is fine. Also, the stripe pattern on the ground when
I light up the tires is even. I run the tires at 32-34 psi.

As I have said before, it's not a good idea to run a 315 on
a 9.5" rim.

Looking at the 295s available in 18" sizes, some have a minimum 9.5" rim rating. The problem is nobody makes a 295 (or 305) in a 17" size. I've researched this in depth on several different occassions and here's what you can do:
17x9" wheel: max width tire=275
17x9.5" wheel: max width tire=285
17x10" wheel: max width tire=315
17x11" wheel: max width tire=335
18x9.5" wheel: max width tire=295/30
18x10.5" wheel: max width tire=315

All of these figures depend on the tire brand/model as well, as some tires in the same size will have different minimum widths from depending on vendor and model of tire.

Also, keep in mind that running the widest tire available for a given rim width will not nescessarily give you the best performance.

Fred loves to post this pic...

it is a 11" rim with a 315 tire, next to a 9.5" rim with a 275 tire.

Do you really think the 315 would fit on the 9.5" rim properly?

Thank you very much. If you can't understand by simply thinking about it, how does a fairly obvious visual do for yall. Do what you want, but a 315 tire was designed for larger wheels than 9.5 inches.

You're right... it was designed for a bigger wheel. But It's been done on 9.5's... with nittos anyway. I rode around for almost 2 years on them before I got enough money to buy some new wheels.

If Jimmy drives the Supra to work tomorrow I'll try to go out and get a pic of the 315 nittos on a 9.5" wheel. I think you'll be surprised.

well it seems like the general idea is not to do it on a 9.5" rim so does anywhere know where i can get 2 11" polished zr1s at a reasonable price...or would it be cheaper to have my 9.5s widened?

Yeah I dont think the argument is whether or not you can get a nitto 315 tire to fit on a 9.5 inch wheel. We are just saying that 315 size tires are not suppose to go on a 9.5 inch wheel.

My Impala SS wheels are 17x8.5. Would it be ok to put some 275/40s on there? I want to put some Nitto DRs on there and don't want to buy new rims for .5 an inch. Thanks.

This is for a Goodyear Eagle F1

275/40YR17
1433lbs. load
44psi
8/32nds tread depth
9-11" allowable rim width range
9.5" optimal rim width
10.9" sectin width
25.6" overall diameter

You can look around and see if any manufacturers support an 8.5" rim, but the one above requires a minimum 9". I got my information from www.tirerack.com

Well I know they don't recommend it, that's why I'm asking. I'm sure for liability reasons they are conservative. I'm more concerned with for all practical purposes will I have any problems. It seems much more sensible than stuffing a 315 on a 9.5

I know several guys running Nitto 315/35r17s on 17x9 with NO PROBLEMS!

Need a pic?

Here ya go:
Nitto 315 on stock 17x9 wheel

BTW - Although that's not a F-Body, it is still a 17x9 wheel

Ever see a later C4 Vette? Their stock 285 tires bulge more than that. I've never heard of any problems with them...
