Question 306cc, ported head without headers

How would the car run with a 306cc, ported heads with out headers. The reason why I ask this is I only have two thousand to spend right now. I was thinking of doing this and probably maybe a month later getting some headers.

I know the car won't have it's full potential but can this damage the engine?

the reason is one of my friends is leaving on a trip in a few weeks so nows my chance to have a garage for about a week.

lol! I thought you meant 306cc cylinder heads at first.. I think you're talking about the Comp Cams 306 cam, yes? Without headers? It's nice to have a garage to do the job, but you may want to wait until you can get some headers. The manifolds already choke the crap out of the stock cam.. and it's tiny. Maybe you can work something out with your buddy for the use of the garage when you've got everything you need?

You can put them in and do the headers later. Only thing you will be hurting is power untill you get the headers. You will only be down at the most 30 hp So it would be something you could live with for a little while.

I think you'd be down a bit more than 30 hp. My car picked up 40 RWHP and 40 RWTQ with headers, and that's a stock motor. You won't KILL the motor, but probably affect the drivability of it with that much intake and no exhaust. An engine is an air pump, more air in, more air out, more power. To compare, breathe in through a paper towel roll, and exhale through a coffee stir straw. Not very effective is it? Sure you could do it, but don't expect the car to be anywhere near its potential until you do the headers.

Is the only thing you done was put on headders? to get 40 rwhp??? or did you change plugs wires or anything else at the same time maybe a cat back?? 40 RWHP sounds like big gain I whish everone got that out of headders.

yes, u can do heads/cam without doing headers. but.....if u are going to pull the manifolds off, u might as well save yourself the trouble of putting them back on and taking back off again. id just put the headers on the credit card and do it all at once. youll thank yourself later

I did wires too, but I seriously doubt that the car was making over 260 rwhp stock. That is about right, some people say a bit high for an m6 car. I wasn't completely clear, but when I said headers, I would presume that you have at least a 3" catback for it. I'm sure the stock exhaust would choke off some power. So in effect, full exhaust is worth 40 RWHP. Gains everywhere though too.

The problem is that you will lose low end torque with the 306, and then the cam won't be able to breathe effectively at high RPM. So, you could wind up with less power throughout the RPM range. It's all about the combination. I'd do the headers first, or save up and do both at the same time.

Don't forget to budget in a reprogram, or at least find someone with the correct editing software. The car will run like **** on the stock ECM prog.

Like llafro said... Thats a big cam and it needs to rev high to make power.
My cc305 220in/230ex makes max HP between 5700-6300 rpms then my rev limiter hits. During those rpms the hp is within 8rwhp of each other. The cam should probably be spun to 6500rpms.
The CC306 is even more than that...

2000 dollars is low balling it for heads and cam though..

90 bucks for a mail order tune +150 if u dont have an OBDI
Over 200 bucks for all the gaskets
900 dollars for the cam and all its retainers, springs, rockers, etc
600 bucks for ported heads with stock valves or 1100 for increase valves from lloyd.
50 bucks for 2 oil changes for the break in cycle
Plus another 300 dollars in stuff that comes up

It is alot. It adds up real quick. I'm just going to take my time and get the headers, get my heads ported for now so by the time it's done I should have enough for the cam etc.

I would have had enough money for more but problems accured recently, ohwell, thats what I work for.

I didn't realize it could add up all so fast.

Thanks guys
