306 valvetrain, which parts are a must?
306 valvetrain, which parts are a must?
Alright I am fixing to get me a 306. I think I am going to get the 918 beehive springs so it can handle the lift that I will have with my 1.6 crane SA roller rockers. Now on the springs I know to get new retainers, but what about cups and shims(I don't even know what a shim is). Also what are the dampers that go with some springs and do I need them. Is there anything else I need to get for the springs? Do I need to upgrade to ARP hardend rocker studs or is this not necessary for the my 1.6 rocker arms. Also I guess I need to get the comp "r" lifters. Also do I need to get the expensive chromely pushrods, or is there some other pushrod that will work just fine? Please let me know if I am missing something. Thanks for any help and sorry for so many questions.

You won't get a lot of replies because this is asked almost daily. I will help you out though because I was in the same boat.
Absolute MINIMUM. (Acording to JSetzer)
-New timing set (oem replacement works, but get a chain and gears)
-Springs (I run the 612s from CMS, no shims, comes with locks retainers good to .600)
What I did:
_New timing set
-Springs
-Replacement hardened pushrods ($20ish)
-used low mile oem lifters ($30)
-Gasket set (water pump, opti, crank, timing cover, intake) All easy to replace while its apart. Good maintanance.
===> I made it like this for @ 3k miles and broke a rocker.
-Now using crane gold 1.6 RR's.
Better:
-Elec Water Pump
-Double roller timing set or something heavy duty
-Comp r lifters or similar
-Springs... Something nice. Beehives maybe.
-Fancy locks/retainers
-Chromoly pushrods
-New cam bearings
Call dave at CMS and ask him on springs. He will get you everything you need for them. If it is not a 100% race car, you can get by on your stock studs.
Your cranes should clear your stock valve covers with no modification.
Anything else?
