306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
Which will get more power on stock head, 306 ( 230 / 244, .510 / .540 112 LSA ) with stock rocker OR LT4 hot cam kit(218 / 228, .525 / .525 112 LSA )with 1.6 roller rocker?

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
Really in a stock headed car the differenced wont be much if any, the 306 will sound meaner but on stock heads a hot cam or other small cam actually works prety well. Look at Greg's 97 Z28 or Frank Bs old set up, on stock heads having a huge cam wont help much. Once you put heads on it, the bigger cam will make more power.

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
My point exactly, we had a guy at a local track 93 Trans am, NO OTHER supporting mods, other than a cc306....he ran 14.50 at 99.... rather embarassing. WHen i mean stock, he had the stock air intake
But when it comes to a properly supported setup cc306 will out do a lt4 hotcam, in most catagories except gas milage and emissions.

The equation like this to make it easy
Stock head----------------Stock head
306 cam ---------------- LT4 hot cam
Stock rocker-------------1.6 roller rocker
Which will make more powerful?

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
If this is a street/strip car, I'd go with the hotcam in that situation.
In my opinion, with stock heads there really not much point in using the cc306. With a good tune, the CC306 might put out a bit more power on the dyno, but the car is goign to make that power up high in the rpm range. With the cc306, your optimal shift point is going to be higher than you probably want to shift the car... and keep it reliable. The hotcam is also gonna be better on the car gas milage wise and be more streetable.
There are plenty of guys on here who are running the cc306 on stock heads and will say good things about it. If you think an extra 5-10hp up around 6000rpms is worth the trade off driveability, then by all means go with teh CC306. Like others have said, the CC306 would be a much better cam if you had a set of ported heads to compliment it.
Out of curiosity, why are you just looking at these two cams? There are plenty of intermediately sized cams on the market as well. The XE224/230, and GM846 are two cams that fit in between the hotcam and cc306 and would offer a good compromise.

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
I was just wondering, how much power are guys with the XE 224/230 or GM846 putting down. I really liked the drivability of the Hotcam kit but I only made 315 RWHP on an A4 1996 Z28 and I'd like a more aggressive setup for the 93 but not as aggressive as the CC306.

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
I got 326 SAE with the XE 224/230 & stock heads. That's through an auto with RK headers. Maybe some LT's would've put that around 330, dunno. Doubt it.
As for the HC vs 306, I agree with Steve0.

my friends formula w/ mac mid's flowmaster cat-back and cold air w/ a 306 and 1.6 rr's stock tuning stock heads went 113 in the 1/4 also car was a m6 stock gears stock suspension. the 306 is the better cam but a little bit more wild on a stockk headed car than the lt4 as far as daily driving but he did w/ no problems.

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
DO NOT RUN STOCK STAMPED ROCKERS ON TEH CC306. I did and nearly lost a motor. They can not handle that much lift, I snapped the tip off right where it touches the valve. The rocker was pushing the retainer, but not the valve. By the grace of someone the locks held in place the few minutes it ran like that.
Some people have gotten away with it, worth chancing it to save $150 and lose power, no.
Oh and cc306 all the way.

also i dont plan on running this cam long, just need somthing for this summer and maybe partial next.

Re: 306 or LT4 Hot Cam ?? Which more powerful?
CC306 100%.
My car has a stone stock long block other than the CC306 cam, so far Ive ran 12.74@112 on an 85+ degree day with a HORRABLE 2.00 60 foot (1994 T56 trans with 3.23s doesnt work) I have some 4.10s now so hopefully that will head into the low 12s really soon. My friend has a 94 B4C also, 100% stock long block other than the CC306 cam he has an auto with a 3000 stall and 3.73s. His best is a 12.4@110 with a 1.7 60 foot. On the other hand 2 of my other friends are running the LT4 cam and neither of them have gotten a solid day of 12 second e/ts yet, even on a 40 degree night of racing. One has ran 12.97@106 and the other went 12.91@106. Both are M6 cars and all of these cars have had a custom tune. No mail order stuff and all e/ts were run on 255/50/16 BFG drag radials. The CC306 whoops the LT4 hands down in the performance department. As for a daily driver the LT4 wins even though I drive my car everyday to work on a 60 mile round trip and have sat in traffic for 2 hours and NEVER had any hint of a problem. If you can handle alittle bit of idle surge when its cold Id go with the CC306 in a heart beat. Just my 2 cents.
