3 speed auto tranny

I just got a used 4L60E from a 1995 firebird LT1. I also got the center console and shifter but noticed it is only a 3 speed with no overdrive. Did firebirds come with no overdrive?

Tell us exactly what it says on the shift indicator.

I bet you got an indicator that does not have a "1" on it (for a 2.73 rear end ratio car). All autos with the LT1 were 4 speed overdrive autos.

sounds like you got the non-performance axle car,no worries all you need is a rear from a 6speed car(3.42s) or install 3.73s,its a cool street racing trick to add the gear and leave the shifter alone,no need to shift the 4l60e

Re: 3 speed auto tranny

OK guys I should tell you a little more about what I am doing. I originally had a 1994 3.4L Camaro. I hauled that motor out and putting in a 1994 LT1. I also got a 1995 auto tranny from a firebird. He also sent me the console and when I looked at it it only had 2,3, and D on the shifter. Now my shifter does have the overdrive in it with my V6 tranny. I also have 3.73 gears installed. So should I leave my original console in my car to work with the 95 auto tranny? And will i have overdrive?

You got the plate from a car with 2.73 gears as suspected. It does not show a "1" on it. 2 still = 2nd gear and 3 is the same as drive. "D" is overdrive. It does not matter what the plate says, you still have all 4 gears. If you got the shifter from the 2.73 equipped car, it may have a little block that keeps it from being pulled into 1st gear (that's why the plate had no "1" on it). You can easily remove this block with a hacksaw blade or other instrument. I imagine your V6 shifter would work fine, as well.
