3:73's making noise while coasting
I recently had gears installed proffessionally. They are great, gm gears. When I am in gear, they dont make noise, but when I take it out of gear and coast, they whine. Whats going on? I called the guy who did it, he said this might be from them breaking in. Is this normal? It drives me nuts? There is no pressure on them when I am coasting to a stop. What to do?
yeah i just had 3.73's installed about a month ago. they are the GM motive gears, and they do the same thing! the guy told me it might whine for a while till they break in, and he told me to bring it back for a check-up, so they can re-shim it. well i brought it in a few days ago and just got it back again and now its worse!! he said sometimes its a pain to get right, and it just has to be adjusted a few times! so i have to bring it back AGAIN!! no charge of course!
i would give it a few days and call him back. if it is a decent shop then they will take it back and open up the rear and redo it if they have to. kinda weird though how they dont whine when im in gear driving, only out of gear, or when slowing down. but people on the board SWEAR gears are not supposed to whine AT ALL! and if its so loud it bothers you, then something is prolly wrong!

Every car I have ever been in with gears has had a little whine, both installed by pros and by us driveway installers. If it is very loud, tere is a problem, but a little whine won't hurt. Some people have said that you can hear the whine only because our diff. is very thin (damn 10-bolt rears
). Gears will always whine, but the thicker the diff. the less you hear. My $0.02

Man this gear thing sux, im having the same problem, i am now on my third gear in a matter of 2 months and their still whining loudly. If the gear only whines a little than its not a problem but if they start whining loudly then they were not set up properly and or u didnt break them in properly. Also if ur gear is whining loudly than u have no choice but to install a brand new set due to a bad wear pattern on the ones u have now, unfortunatley readjusting them isnt going to make a difference because they have already developed a pattern.
Good luck,

Contray to popular belief some gears will make noise no matter who sets them up.
My FACTORY 2.72s had gear whine...so does our second 95 Z28 with 3.23s.
Quietest set I have had was a used set of GM 3.73s out of a S-10.
After market gears when setup properly usually make noise on decel. They should NOT make noise at cruise or acceleration. The reason is the way they were cut. I went through this before being the picky bastard I am. We finaly installed a fresh set of gears and all was MUCH better.
If you truely have GM gears I would have them reset them and try again. There may be a little noise on decel but it should be almost un-noticable.
