3.73s are in...

My gears are in. I picked up the car this morning. There is NO whine whatsoever....I'm very happy with the shop I went to. He only charged me $150 plus the cost of gear lube and posi additive (came to $165). I didn't get on it yet.....I'm going to wait maybe 2 days to let the gears go through a few heat cycles first. I can tell how much quicker the car accelerates with light throttle though. I'll be posting once I get on it telling you guys how easy it is to spin the tires.

Gear

I had some 4.10's in mine and it would spin in to 4th gear easily i blew em up soon and went to the 3.42 it made a bigger difference in speed which i found better for gas as well but good luck good idea to go slowly for a few days so they adjust properly

lol , good deal man. Wish there was a shop around here that would do a good job of it for 150 bucks labor man. My friend helped me do it and it was a PITA to get that pinion bearing off. I almost woulda rather paid someone to do it lol. We have to go back in there in a couple weeks cuz its whining a little bit , we didnt have the perfect carrier shims to line it up perfect , so it has a lil backlash. Stock rebuild tho , no gears , I would have if the damn hypertech that came with the car worked and/or hypertech would help me fix the thing , lol.

Yo

How much did the actual gears cost? I want 3.73 in mine... just if you could please... can you post how much your mpg goes down please? In the 2 days that is... because I don't want to rip around town that much when I get mine... I like to get decent gas mileage... :-)

I recently discovered I have 4.10s... I have no complaints at all about my mileage. The 4.10s dont feel high at all... I cant imagine what 2.73s are like I dont think higher gears will hurt the mileage in an m6... they make 6th gear that much more usable. They also make lightin'-em-up pretty easy. btw I have no other major mods done to my car... catback and 4.10s are the biggest two.

I just recently went from 2:73's to 3:73s in my 97 Z28...price breakdown is...3:73 ring and pinion for 2 series carrier-198.00, Ratec intallation kit (includes pinion bearings, carrier bearings, crush sleeve, shim...everything you'll need)-96.00, Installation-200.00. Additional expenses you will incure include oil, additive and seal for first change (after break in), reprogramming for speedo correction (Hypertech or PCMforless or whatever you choose). My car is an A4 and I havn't figured the actual milage yet (doing so on todays fill up, I'll let ya know) but I've had them in for about 2 weeks now and the milage doesn't seem to bad. This is my daily driver I drive 17ish miles one way to work everyday. Fun factor WAY improved, but traction is nill. Car will light em up now with little effort. With the 2:73 it would turn 'em over, but now it will fishtail into second gear on street tires/dry pavement. Have fun!!

You have to buy all those pinions and all that extra crap for the gears? Or were those extra options just to impove crap around it? Will I know how to pick it out... because I am not sure if I am going to get ripped off or not... I hate not knowing the freakin answers!!

2.73s.

The gears were $225, installation kit $90. The installation kit IS necessary. I replaced all of the bearings accept for the axle bearings......I don't think I'm going to even bother checking my gas mileage, but usually I get 17mpg around town so I'd expect around 15mpg with conservative driving. Tuning was $225 (I kept my old PCM and just got a new one) frmo www.madz28.com <---HIGHLY recommended.
