off topic and dont want to thread-jack but does your car still fun fine with that many miles on it? i have a 3 yr loan on mine and im around 100,000 miles and am pretty sure these motors can last but was wondering from an actual owner of those miles how it runs and such?

You ultimately want to be in the rpm range just past where your hp/tq has started to drop off for the A4 to shift or be at your top speed in 3rd gear that you would want to be running either at the track when you cross the 1/4 mile, or on the street....this would be at WOT so the convertor will be unlocked.
For example, say your goal speed is 110mph, and your hp/tq start to drop off at around 5800rpm. You ultimately want to find a gear that puts you at 110mph at 6k rpms when in 3rd gear at WOT. That way its pulling hardest and the rpms are thru the majority of the hp/tq curve thru each gear.

Yeah, it runs fine, nice and smooth. These motors can last a long time as long as you take care of them. I've only had to do the usual items on this car, water pump, opti, plugs, and the intake was leaking some but that was easy to just reseal. No complaints here.

A4 is different, but gears would only help me with my M6 up to about 35 mph. After that, it's actually a couple of percent slower. Each gear pulls harder, but also runs out of RPM sooner(earlier mph). If you can get traction, gears will help you in a straight line. Be careful though for interstate cruising speeds, you may end up turning a fairly high RPM.

Personally, I would look at other engine mods first, like ported heads.

Dan,
Ported heads would work great, but when doing a costly mod like that generally you go ahead and do cam, longtubes and custom tune in the same outting. That is a big wallet smacker if you know what I mean.
I know its our own personal opinions and that cool, but for a first mod I would increase the gear ratio. Definitely not too far of course, but increase nonetheless.

Mikie, if you look at his sig, he already has cam, rockers, and headers (mids though), and the retune won't cost much through madz28

Good catch man.
I never noticed that. I still stand by my thoughts he should get gears before heads. Thats just me though.

Thumbs up

I just replaced my 3.23 gears with 3.73 gears in my car this weekend. I love em. I can tell you the car pulls harder in every gear without a doubt. Definitely one of the best mods for an A4. Highway crusing isn't bad at all. Just a few more RPMs.. I like the way I can kick it sideways into second now.

thanks for EVERYONES input, this is really icing the issue over for me, and im sorry i didnt mention it, i DO have an A4 trans, and at the moment, cannot afford and do not what the work of installing a new stall converter, tho i will be changing in out in the future when i turn this car into a nassssty 383 street/strip car, i will be accomidating things with a new racing tranny, bigger heads, cam, headers (the regular things) and probably that Vigilante 3000 stall. but anyways, for now, i just want to gain a little more of my launch back without sacraficing TOO much of my top end, seeing as i cannot tach out my speedometer as it is, i think 3.73's will do me good and im glad most everyones input kinda goes with me

bigger gears will make your car pull harder at every gear/speed/rpm.
