3.23 to 3.42s
If he's doing it for free and you got the 3.42's for a good price...then go for it. The majority of responses to your post have advised 3.73's...which you'd see more SOTP gain...but if all it's going to cost you is $30 and you're done...then more power to ya!
If someone were going to have their gears installed, which runs quite a bit...I'd advise going ahead and getting 3.73's over 3.42's...you'd be glad you did!

I know my shiot about gears, that's why I didn't post this.
The only reason I am going to do it is because I am getting them, with a differential, for $30 and installed for free to very cheap.

3.42's = about 3500RPM @ 75mph
3.73's = about 3800RPM @ 75
For an A4 car that is.

The soft set is more quiet...they both work great....you'd want hardened if your car is a trailer queen and you had hard launch after hard launch....otherwise the soft set works fine....

Okay, let me rephrase that...
3.73: 70mph = 3730RPM 75mph = 3780RPM... so like I said, about 3800RPM... smart guy.

Don't forget that the rpm's will change if you change your tire height.
i have a set of 3.42's and love them, they are perfect for my daily driving, i had a 2.73 before.
at 60 mph. i was turning around 2050 rpm's. in overdrive.
