Take the shift plate cover off and look down in there as you bring the lever back. You will see a little block or tab that stops the lever. All you need to do is cut that block off.

I am curious to why they made the shifter this way? Is there a purpose to it?

Don't see why you'd want to though....unless you have a trans go shift kit where you can manually hold the gear--unless your B&M allows you to hold gears I don't see why you'd want it.

Re: 2nd gear slector

It was made that way due to EPA noise regulation. It was able to stay in first gear to long and it made to much exhaust noise when accelerating and deaccelerating.

I cut mine off because if you are going from a roll it makes it alot easier. I lost to a 95 GT becuase i was going 31pmh and not the 30mph it will down shift to 1st at. It cut the little square off in about 3 minutes with a hacksaw blade. It's really easy, just pop off the part that runs to the console and to the dash.

See that's what i've always heard, but doesn't it shift up anyway? You can't hold it in first

Re: 2nd gear slector

I actually was racing once and i had the selector in 1st and floored it, hit the limiter a few times around 55 and it shifted with the selecter still in 1st. I had forgot to shift. It wont upshift under part throttle. It will only upshift when you bounce off of the limiter i guess.

I did this mod and also got a new shift selector cover piece that has the 1-2-D-N-R-P. Kind of expensive just to have that 1 on there -- ~65$ but it works nice with the TransGo.

Re: 2nd gear slector

The EPA tests were performed on a car that had 1st gear selectable.

It's kind of like the single outlet exhaust on the first SS/WS6 in 1998. It was also to loud for the great EPA and it was phased out mid year.

My shift selector has
L
2
d
OD
N
R
P

I never replaced it. It came this way and I never did the "TAB" mod in it
either and if i pull it down to "L" and redline it will keep going unless i get off
the gas or pop it into "2nd" It looks Original too like it came with
the car....I doubt it the person before me did this because I bought the car
