2nd gear is gone

In a race last night I shifted from 1st to 2nd and had nothing. I thought i blew my clutch but i put it in 3rd and it drove like normal. How much is a new t56 and how much is a rebuild? Is it ok to drive or will i screw up more by driving it?

If you are going to get a new tranny anyway, i say who cares? A new T56 is more than an auto though. Sometimes twice as much more. Expect to pay around $1500 for a used one, probably over $2,000 for a new one. Can you downshift into 1st from 3rd? I would say drain the gear oil out and run a magnet through it to pick up metal shavings and pieces. I dont know about the shift forks on these transmissions but i know if they go out you can lose a gear, but usally in pairs. If you have trouble shifting or down shifting into 1st i would say it could be your shift forks, maybe you just bent the 2nd gear fork to the point of it not even engaging. This is done by not pushing the clutch in all the way and forcing the car into gear. I would say 2nd gear is definately the most molested gear in your whole trans.

yes i can downshift. Just no second. i found a used viper t56, but i dont know if it will bolt up. The price is almost right still kinda high but better. Also how much is a rebuild?

I don't think there is ever a set prive for a rebuild. I think it really all depends on whats wrong with it. Sometimes they just replace seals, synchros, shift forks stuff like that, but it could be something much worse with yours. I really dont know much about transmissions so i would wait for a definate answer. I still think it could be a bent or broken shift fork. Drain the oil and see. If it's just a fork there wont be much or any metal, should be the normal ammount. But if you destroyed the entire gear you shoudl see bits and pieces of metal, almost like small chunks.

As for the Viper trans i dont know if they will bolt up. If you are talking about a Dodge Viper, I would say no, they probably have a different bellhousing. But again i dont know for sure.
