1st time at the track : need advice
1st time at the track : need advice
Hi,
there will be the very first time we will have chance to try our car on our island. It has been decided to close a 4 lane road for quater mile. My problem is : I don't know what are my hopes with my car. I will compete against japanese prep cars and also european ones (SLK32 AMG, S55 AMG, BMW M3, maybe M5, maybe M6 too ...)
I beleive i have chance against japanese cars but the camaro will certainly be the only car without ASR and i don't really know what traction problem i will have.
My car is a 96 Z28 with a hot cam kit + pace setter LT headers, MOROSO CAI, madz28 tune, stock gear. The engine shows 315 RWHP.
Question is : what to do to improve power and efficiency at the track ? every advice will be welcome. Tires ? need to have slicks ? change gear ratio ? stall ? weight reduction ?

All of the above! Get a good stall (2800-3000). Knowing how to launch your car is going to be a BIG factor. Good luck & let us know how you do.

if you want the "free-bees", lower the rear tire pressure and pump up the front, remove spare tire and jack and if you want passenger seat.make sure you have a clean air filter and practice a few hole shots before you get there.have fun and good luck and kill a few rice burners for all of us.

Gears, stall, and a sticky pair of tires will be your best bet. Weight reduction is a free mod to a certain extent, do a search and you will find a whole slew of ideas on where to start with shedding some unnecessary pounds.
thanks for the replies.
what is the best way to lauch the car? I've got an A4 and it is my first automatic. Do you use the 1? then ? then Drive ? or just the 2 and D ? just the D ?
About tires ? what would be the best in dimensions to have best traction without too many weight ?
On weight reduction, i plan to take all passengers seats off, spare wheel. Anything more ?
Also what is the best time can I hope with what speed at the end ?
Thanks

With your power levels, a pair of drag radials will be more then adequate. As for the tranny, leave it in drive and go. As for the weight reduction, some people also take off their front sway bar at the track. Keeping the fuel at a 1/4 to 1/2 tank will save alot of weight as well. Also, small things like floor mats, loose change, CDs, ect all add up.
