1993 LT1 and other misc stuff
Hey guys,
I just bought a '93 LT1 for my '72 Vega GT. I'm wondering what all you would replace before installing the LT1 in my car?
I'm thinking:
- Head gaskets
- Intake gaskets (obviously)
- Oil pan gasket
- Valve cover gaskets
- Rocker arms (moving up to 1.6 full roller)
- LT4 HOT cam
- Spark plug wires
- Spark plugs (anyone have any recommendations?)
- Thermostat
- All coolant hoses
- All hard vacuum lines
Will I have problems with the HOT cam and stock PCM? My engine is speed density so I'm not sure how it will run with the HOT cam.
I have longtubes already installed in my car, and am turfing all accessories except the alternator
Low 13s here we come
Thanks guys,
Colin

How many miles are on the engine?
If it's anywhere near the normal amount of miles, I would reccomend R&R all of the mentioned items.
As to your brands. I went with AC Rapidfires during my overhaul, and have had good luck with them. I would use a set of MSD wires, and go with Felpro for all of your gasket needs. Comp Cams Steel rockers own you, your mother, and all the small furry animals within a 3 block radius.
I would also throw a new oil pump in it while your at it. I'm not too sure about the hot cam, but if I remember right you should'nt have a problem.

You shoud also change the water pump, oil pump, and if you have the money get all new bottom end components, rods, crank, pistons. At the least get the crank refinished, get new bearings and new pistons. You should also think about new valve springs on the heads and new seats. Heck, honestly, you should rebuild the whole thing... if you rebuilt it to stock it probably wouldnt be too much.
Just my .02 cents

alright,
Thanks for the posts, guys.. I want to correct the title.. I did not buy an LT4, I bought an LT1. I had been looking at an LT4 conversion kit a few minutes before and obviously wasn't thinking.. lol
As for what I found today.. I tore down the engine, intending to only replace the head gaskets. I found #1 cylinder had begun the early stages of a head gasket leak between #1 and #3 cylinders.
I've decided to rebuild the engine. None of the bores have any notable wear and there are no ridges at the top of the cylinders. The intention is to simply tank the engine, balance the rotating assembly, hone the block and reinstall the old pistons with new Clevite bearings and rings.
As for the camshaft, I'm still leaning toward the LT4 HOT cam but if anyone else has a grind they can recommend that I can run on the '93 LT1 without PCM changes let me know. I will also be buying new fuel injectors if money permits.
Thanks for the help, and I'll take pics of the LT1 conversion in my Vega for you all once I start the reinstallation.
Later,
Colin

thanks for the replies..
I'll order 24 pound injectors then..
I currently have a set of longtubes but they were being used on a set of older heads (camelbacks on a 327). Can I use those headers on the LT1 even if the LT1 has the D-shaped exhaust ports?
